I decided to write one of my papers on the culture of girls. While I was doing my research the topic of appearance came up everywhere. I started to pay attention to drinks that parents would order for their children, comments that they would make and I asked different people on how they felt about their bodies. The things that I found out really shocked me. Little girls would tell me the reason they don't want whipped cream on their hot chocolate was because it was gross and made you fat. Mothers that make comments about how many calories are in the pastries and insisted on the low-fat scone as the snack for their daughters. Conversations that my little sister has with her friends about their love handles and how far out their stomach comes out (they all had little 4 and 6 packs). People blame the media for the messed up body images that girls have but I believe that the majority of it comes from home. I surprised myself when I sighed in relief that my mom wasn't there when the nurse weighed me a couple days ago at my doctor's appointment. The insecurities sneak in when you least expect it.
