I'm in SUCH an autumn-enjoying mood. I was going to wait till later in October to post this, but what the hell.
In my grade school music class (I think I was about 8 or 9), we listened to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt Suite (Edvard Grieg). The teacher, who I suspect was rather cool, played it loudly, too. I remember feeling the music crawling all over my scalp; it filled me with excitement.
Later, we learned "Halloween lyrics" to that melody (or a somewhat telescoped version of it with a tacked-on ending), and sang them in our music class. The lyrics were really kind of cute! I've always remembered them.
To the tune of "In the Hall of the Mountain King":
On October 31 when the sun goes to rest,
It's the night of Halloween when fun is at its best!
As we say farewell to gloom, Mrs. Witch rides a broom;
All the pumpkins round the place become a funny face.
[melody shifts upwards]
Dressed in white the spirits prowl, goblins howl everywhere;
Off the shelves come tiny elves, better beware!
Pretty jack-o-lanterns glow everywhere that you go,
There is fun for everyone, October 31!
I googled lines from the lyrics and came up with nothing. I wonder if the teacher wrote them?
best line:
Off the shelves come tiny elves, better beware!
Reminds me just a little of "
700 Elves" by Steeleye Span.
