We were talking in email about the movie Billy Budd (1962), my beloved Terence Stamp's first film.
I said I thought it had a significant gay subtext.

Well, sure, it COULD be interpreted that way... But so could a lot of things that aren't necessarily gay. Like a man eating a popsicle, or liking Coldplay, or tapping his foot in a men's restroom stall, or having sexual intercourse with other men.
