I love the pure, high, innocent Appalachian voice/expression of Iris DeMent. [Incidentally, no one as old as Emmylou Harris should look that good.]

Her rendition of "Pretty Saro" in the movie Songcatcher, with only that violin in the background, was one of the most moving things I've ever seen/heard. That one scene made an otherwise very mediocre movie worth watching. It was, like, the 'Llorando' of American mountain folk music in a movie.

And since I referenced it...

Rebekah del Rio's rendition of 'Llorando' was, for me, the climactic scene of a marvelous and haunting movie (Mulholland Drive). When she sings one particular section, it feels like lightning shoots up my spine and flashes over my scalp, arms, legs, back.

Dime tú qué puedo hacer
No me quieres ya
y siempre estaré
llorando por tu amor...

movies, music, sadness
