There are two novel series (Harry Potter and Lynley) where in the last few years I've been crazy enough to buy the hardcover version first, because I didn't want to wait. I always buy the paperback later as well and sell the hardcover again :-) It's crazy I know, but I bought the first few of the series as paperback and it just looks better and my bookshelves if all of the series is in paperback. And I prefer paperback anyway.
