The golden leaves flitted helplessly as they wind carried them across the grounds of Hogwarts. Minerva watched them pick up at one spot, float for a while, and then land somewhere else, only to continue the cycle again moments later. She loved the predictability of autumn, the way you knew the leaves would change and the lake would freeze and Professor Dumbledore would have the first and second years decorate pumpkins to place inside the Great Hall. Minerva liked to bask in the faint glow of the Jack-O-Lanterns, something so predominantly muggle, and yet still here at this magical school. They reminded her of Xiomara, more than anything else.

Her girlfriend was quite the force to be reckoned with, something Minerva learned at an early age. Even now, after knowing the girl for more than seven years, she was never quite sure just how much the Ravenclaw could take. She did know that the other girl was abused as a child, cast out by her family at an early age because of her magic and forced to live with her grandmother, who was kind and loving and accepted her granddaughter for what she was, but who did not remember how to raise a child. She knew that most of the kids in Xiomara’s primary school were downright awful to her, calling her horrible names because she liked playing with the boys more than she liked talking about them, and she’d rather study for hours than listen to whatever gossip was crackling over the radio.

In many ways, Mara reminded Minerva of midnight. She was all-encompassing at times, able to enveloped the smaller girl in her strong Beater arms and protect her from the world. She was full of opportunity, always offering to lend Minerva a hand or suggesting a new adventure for the two of them to embark on. In her eighteen years of life, Minerva could not remember anyone being a comforting and open as Xiomara was, despite the girl’s obvious strength. Like the moon, she was always there for Minerva, holding her tightly as she fell asleep and keeping her company on the nights she spent studying until dawn.

As Xiomara walked over to the Scottish Gryffindor, Minerva looked up at her and smiled. “You’re like my moon,” she said, not realizing just how cheesy those words sounded until after they slipped through her lips, “I mean…well…how was Quiditch?” She didn’t like being awkward around Mara, but a statement like that wasn’t exactly one that could be easily explained. The most obvious way of ignoring her slip-up was changing the subject. Unfortunately, Mara would have none of that.

Dipping down to kiss Minerva on the cheek, the Ravenclaw dragged her lips up towards her girlfriend’s ear, effectively sending shivers down her back. “That’s good, then, Minnie,” she replied, her words coming out is bursts of hot breath, causing visible puffs to linger in the frozen air, “Because you’re my sunshine.”
