I am having a fantastic day. My life and moods have been really swingy lately, and I need to see to that, but this is one really great upswing.

Art exhibit, and lots about comics. )

Well, I've only read about a third of the book so far, but I'd say that you don't need to know Tori's music. I do own a pretty fair chunk of her discography, but not the most recent couple of albums, and quite a few of the comics are based on those.

It's honestly not as expensive as I expected, given the size and production values, but still. I'll get back to you on the worth it thing once I've finished reading? I'm definitely being introduced to a lot of artists who I'd like to see more from, already, and some writers as well.

Yeah, the first volume of Planetary was pretty fantastic, I definitely need to read more. (It also complimented the superhero documentary nicely!) I've heard that The Authority is wonderful in parts and not so in others . . . which is the great thing about getting comics at the library. I'm finally starting to read the things I've always wanted to, but wasn't sure about spending money on! Hmm, I should really get Hellblazer and more Birds of Prey . . . there's so much.

I liked The Dark Knight Returns, with some definite caveats, which I might talk about later (it ties into a number of other thoughts I have . . . questions I'm pondering as a whole about the relative worth of various "groundbreaking" stories, why I didn't make it through Wanted, all sorts of things really). Though I have to say, I really don't think it can be THE Batman story, because it basically exists in contrast with most of the Batman stories up to that point; it needs them in order to work, I think. (I'd always sort of had the impression that The Killing Joke gets touted as THE Batman story. I'm not sure I think there is such a thing, but I think that would be a better candidate, theoretically.) I'm also very disenchanted with Miller, to the point that I'm actively trying to give him more of a chance.

No, I haven't heard of that! It sounds really interesting; thanks for the link. :)
