Day Five: Favorite female character on a male-driven show

Amy on Big Bang Theory

“I have spent my life in pursuit of pure knowledge. Until I met you, my decisions were founded in logic and reason. And yet here I stand before you, 130 pounds of raging estrogen, longing to grab hold of your gluteus maximus, and make Shakespeare's metaphorical beast with two backs.”

I think the males on this show are vile creatures and I have issues with the stupidity of a lot of the themes going on. I don't watch it actively but I to me, it's one of the most male-centric shows to air right now, with a slant towards blokey blokes who feel rejected by women - likely because they are assholes who treat women like the guys on the show treat women - and want to laugh about silly girls being silly.

But. Amy is the one spot of light in this darkness. (And Penny, for that matter, but her character is really badly written in parts and inconsistent, which always enrages me.)

I hope she either stays single forever to rule the world or gets together with the one man on the show who doesn't deserve to be hit in the head - the guy who owns the comic book store - because pairing her with an asexual when she clearly isn't one just isn't fair. They'd never do that to the males on the show but oh, I keep forgetting that geeky girls have no libido.

Day Six: Favorite female-driven show

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Angelus: No weapons, no friends, no hope. Take all that away, and what's left?
Buffy: Me.

I'll have to go with Buffy here. Not because it's perfect, because it isn't. Not because it hasn't got some major flaws that gives me issues, because it does. But because flaws and all, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was fundamentally on Buffy's side. Even when she fucks up, the show is hers. During the later seasons, Buffy was often a bit of a bastard and threw hero tantrums - “I am the law!” - and you could disagree with her but you never had to worry that the show would turn on her like I feel that some texts (ADWD and the Cersei chapter of slutshaming, for example) turn on female characters. In the end, Buffy was still a hero, albeit a little darker and a little less good. Which is the way these things should go.

Day Seven: A female character that needs more screen time

Edith Crawley on Downton Abbey

“There is time for sentiment, but not sentimentality.”

Sullen, plain and chronically overshadowed, Edith remains my favourite sister. There are a few scenes with her where we really get to see her shine but overall the show focuses on everyone but her, it seems. I like how she is around people who appreciate her - during the first season I sort of hoped she'd marry that man who has now decided he is much too old for her, because he brought out interesting things in her. I think she's got so much potential and I am always fascinated by her way of always being overlooked by everyone, regardless of if she's plotting the demise of her older sister or doing kind things for others.

(There's also a massive surge of dislike for Edith, I've noticed. Because she a) interferes with the Epic True Love Forever couple and b) kisses a married man OMG WHAT A SLUT! I wonder if the entire fandom is made up of the religious right and/or teenagers.)
