A 30 days of ASOIAF meme stolen from wildefan and sternflammenden

Day 01: Favorite character from book/show - At the moment it's Tywin Lannister. He is awful and brilliant and has a backstory that is just wonderful and it's so easy to imagine that he has become what he thought he needed to be, which is not necessarily the person he would have become if things were different. I love that he sees the world for what it is, that no men are ever free, and I love that he is usually right in all his hard, cruel, unrelenting glory. (I find it fantastic to imagine rebelling against him because it would be such an immensely frustrating thing to do. You'd be all “I know I am right here, I have ideals and shit!” and Tywin would claim you're wrong, then the rest of the universe would prove him right and eventually he would crush your opposition and ride off on his warhorse.) I love his fucked-up, dysfunctional relationship with his children. I love that he does things that are impossible to excuse, like the Tysha-thing which is vile, but from his POV it still makes a twisted sort of sense. It makes him seem all the more real.

And I love that he didn't cause this spiraling house vs house conflict either, which you sometimes forget while reading the books and all the Stark!reactions to him - he just responded to it. (If he had been at King's Landing and bitch-slapped Jeoffrey a bit more, things would have been different because for all his massive faults, Tywin can solve problems.) I think what ultimately pushed me into liking the old bastard was A Storm of Swords when he talks about the sacking of King's Landing and tells Tyrion that Robert had looked so relieved when Tywin presented him with the bodies of the dead Targaryen heirs. Because Robert knew he needed them dead but he considered himself a hero ”and heroes don't kill children.” I think every single one of my most favourite characters ever are the ones who do that - kill children for the perceived heroes, so the heroes don't have to. I just find that side of the coin so much more interesting.
