Now I get it. Character has been a question in past elections because the characters of the nominees were questionable. This time, maybe, we'll actually get to the issues. Because, at first blush, I like Palin. And I like Obama, Biden, and even McCain. I think they are all basically persons of integrity, certainly when speaking relatively. I disagree vehemently with what I know about Palin's policies, but I admire her grit, determination, and eloquence.
Did anyone see McCain's message to Obama last night? He had a brief ad after the convention that basically said, "Job well done. We'll be back at it tomorrow, but congratulations on a great convention." I thought that was a nice touch. That and Obama's statement to Palin that she will be a "terrific" candidate (ignoring the spokesperson's statement) make me hope against hope that they will put pettiness aside.
And I didn't think I cared that much that we've only ever had white men in our White House. But turns out I'm just so darned excited that no matter who wins some taboo will be broken. I do think Obama's election will lead to greater substantive change in our politics than McCain and his selection of Palin, which is really an actualization of the symbolic and historic candidacy of Hillary Clinton. I know I'm a sappy romantic, but somehow politics just seems like so much more fun today.
