When Luce had bought Gabby in the auction, she had let her mind go through any number of possibilities as to what to use for their time together. She had thought about dinner or swimming or even a night out at the club to dance, but in the end, Luce had bowed to her sense of practicality.

She's waiting, now, with kneepads and gloves outside the site of her greenhouse. She could have done anything on this day, but instead of taking a risk and a chance, she's scared. And so she's going to be practical.

They're going to garden. It might not be the best afternoon, but Luce has genuine difficulty not thinking of it as the best way to spend hours of her time.
