It was ten minutes earlier; Xander lowered his gun, unable to kill a man, even coach Thompson. The coach was smiling, grinning, like the cat who ate the canary. Smiling…
Guns, she turned around, not looking at the coach as he made a thud against the floor.
Three cops had entered the house, all three were undercover, badges pinned to their chest. She flinched looking at them. One of them came over to the coach, leaning up to him and then turned to Harmony.
”Come here.” The vampire whimpered and cried but obeyed. She was then made to drink of the dying man. Buffy kept staring as the cop made a cut in Harmony’s wrist, bringing it to the downed man’s lips. Even if the man had been able to protest he wouldn’t have been able to fight it. Time honoured way of ensuring that a suspect couldn’t fully escape justice. As he drew his last breath the coach stared up in fear.
Buffy grabbed her phone and tried to call home, no reception.
”Come on mom, please pick up.” No response.
Five minutes earlier, Buffy got away from the cops and up to the car.
Now she stood at the window and saw Willow talking to William. Her mom and Dawn were right behind him.
“I don’t even remember my mother” she heard him say, right before he ripped Willow’s head of. Right before Dawn jumped into his arms. Buffy opened the door and nearly died of relief, falling into her mother’s arms.
Mom was ok; she was fine, alive and Dawn too. William tilted his head, still watching her. She went over to him and they faced off.
”Thank you, oh god, thank you.”
She fell in his arms and he held her, caressing her hair.
When they heard someone coming in William quickly let go and went to his knees. Mom was looking at her and her vampire, but she was keeping quiet. When the cops asked what had happened all they got was the story of the loyal pet vampire protecting his owners from a vampire gone on a rampage. One of the cops petted William as he took her mothers testimony. William didn’t lean into it like he normally would, but the cop didn’t seem to notice.
Cordy was sitting on the couch, her hands in her lap. She’d barely even moved since they’d gotten back. Dawn had gotten Angel from the basement. The larger vampire seemed restless and hadn’t calmed down till he’d seen William. Sniffing him, holding him. William let him, but in the way that an adult would let a child manhandle him.
She knew she should be telling now. After what Willow had done to Faith, to Faiths family. She should be screaming it out that the vampire kneeling at her feet was wild, dangerous, free. Wasn't it her duty first and foremost to protect her family and then it hit her. William was part of her family, one of them. He'd proved that when he protected Dawn and her mother. To betray him now, would be betraying one of her own and she couldn't let it be said that the vampire had more ability to care for his loved ones than she did.
She ordered William to her room, better to get him out of the cops’ sight before they noticed something was up. He hesitated, but obeyed. Angel had gone in a down position at Cordy’s feet; seemingly annoyed that William didn’t fully respond to him. She almost felt like apologizing to him, saying, sorry, but your kid has his mind back and he doesn’t want to play anymore.
“Officer, I have … an admission to make.”

“Officer, I have … an admission to make.”
Spike almost stopped in the middle of the stairs when he heard the cheerleaders words. But he knew he couldn’t take any risks, not if he didn’t want to spend the rest of the night in the pound before they brought him to the vampfarm for reconditioning.
He stopped as soon as he was in Buffy’s room and leaned up against the door, desperate to hear what was being said downstairs.
“I’ve been having visions for a while now. I didn’t think they were real at first but…”
“But now you’ve seen proof that they are?”
“Yes.” She sounded shaky and scared. “I saw Faiths family and Willow. We just didn’t get there in time.”
There were two modes of response; the man could have gone all accusing, blaming Cordy for the deaths, for not revealing her gift sooner. But he didn’t, he chose the second path and spoke to her in a soothing and understanding voice. Cordy would have to go with them, to be registered as a seer and brought to the visionary institute where she could be protected and her visions could be accepted early enough to be of use.
“Can I take Angel?”
Spike’s heart broke, would they take him away again. It might not yet be Angelus, not the real one. But he could be, and if he were gone now, he might lose him for years to come.
“I’m afraid not. Something might be arranged later on, but I don’t think that the Institute allows their seers to bring in unauthorized vampires.”
“He can stay here.” There was silence after Buffy’s words. Then Cordy was crying and her heartbeat and scent left the room, along with the cops. He stayed at the door, hearing Buffy’s footsteps. Barely in time to back off, Buffy just smiled as she caught him eavesdropping. She sat down on the bed and patted the spot next to her. He sat down, eyes focussed on his hands.
“Thank you.” She said once again.
“If it hadn’t been for you.”
Buffy sat there still stunned. He wondered what she’d seen that was bothering her so much.
“Thank you William. God thank you.”
She sat still next to him, he wasn’t sure what to do, finally he decided on patting her on the shoulder. Humans did that right? He pulled back; unsure of how much she’d allow, she was shivering. He placed his hand on hers, trying to give comfort that he wasn’t even sure whether it was welcomed or not.
“So what are we going to do?”
“I’m guessing that letting me go is not an option.”
Hey he had to at least try.
“Not if it means that you get recaptured within a week.”
“Oh. Balls”
And she was right, with all the hunters out there, with all the slayers; he wouldn’t survive out on his own. All the dark places had been thrown wide open and he’d be nothing more than yet another wild vamp free for the taking.
“So what? You expect me to just stay at your feet and do whatever you say? I’m not a pet anymore Slayer. I can’t act like one.”
“What I don’t…”
“So what, you want me to be your butler then? Stay in the house, serve as a slave?”
“Of course not!”
“Then what Slayer. Tell me what am I supposed to do. Tell me what you expect of me, what you think…”
She started grinning. He glared.
”What?”
“You really aren’t going to be capable of keeping silent are you?”
She laughed at that, taking the piss with him. He couldn’t help feeling embarrassed.
“Are you going to tell me I should?”
“Would it be any help?”
“Hell no. Not without incentive.”
“What kind of incentive?”
That’s where he was stuck, what could he get that he wanted, what could he hope for. Sure he could live here, play pretend that he was free while stuck in the house. But was that life? It might work for now, or for a year, but sooner or later, it wouldn’t hold. Not forever.
Ah well, who gives a damn.
He kissed her, a quick peck on the lips, then more when she didn’t pull back. She grabbed him, pulled him closer. He held her as she leaned into his arms and they both fell down on the bed, her in his arms, still kissing, not relenting till she had to come up for air.
He let go of her finally, she sat on top of him as she got up, straddling him. She could feel him grow hard underneath her, feel every part of him underneath the flimsy rubber suit.
“Like that?” she asked.
Oh yes, hell yes.
