I feel like such a masochist watching 9/11 As It Happened on MSNBC. Not only is it horrifically sad to think about it, I seem to watch these memorials and replays every year. ):
The new memorial for the towers is made by two giant waterfalls (which are super loud) surrounded by the engraved names of the victims. But before that, they used two lights from those two spots to pierce the sky. In comparison to all the horror and chaos of that day, the lights always seemed beautiful and calm to me. I hope they don't stop using them now that they have a permanent monument.
On a lighter note,
The Onion posted a comedy video titled "Al Qaeda Also Fed Up With Ground Zero Construction Delays" (
here) several years ago when it was rumored that a Freedom Tower was to be built over the two towers site. At least someone had the good sense to realize that this was a very stupid idea! Imagine some crazy terrorist try to fly another plane into a beam of light or into a hole in the ground. (Although, I probably wouldn't be surprised if they tried... >> )
And the BBC has a great gallery of images from the
9/11 Anniversary.
