Today my Grandmother's best and life-long friend Louise came to visit her. Originally, my Mom and aunt had tried to arrange this visit for my Grandma's birthday in September, but the holidays just worked out to be the right time.

Except it was sad. We had been told that my Grandma's friend was losing her memory, but still I imagine today was a little difficult for Grandma, who is still brilliant and wonderful. Louise, while smiling, pleasant, and in seemingly excellent physical health, had a somewhat vacant look. She had difficulty remembering my Grandma's name. She had forgotten that the two went to high school together. She forgot that my Grandma had been her maid-of-honor, at that my Grandma had been hers. It was bittersweet, though, because she did remember my Grandma, and she knew they were the best of friends, and that they had loved each other since they were girls.

I learned how important friendship is today. It can last eighty years, hundreds of miles, and through the foggy mist of a fading memory. I love you all, and I wanted you to know that now.
