L'Angleterre et La France

Jul 03, 2008 14:04

So this marks the first week of my international adventure (I guess technically tomorrow is the first week, but whatever), and an adventure it's been. London was expensive and had to be planned out to a tee apparently. I thought that the whole point of Europe was to be spontaneous. I guess not. Apparently in London you have to book a hostel in advance. I'm sorry, but booking a bed that is in a room shared with 15 other people (one of which looks homeless and is setting up his bed in the smallest undies ever created for a man of his size) does not sound like "booking ahead" material to me. And it's true, it rains in London (and in Paris) a lot. Especially when you can't find a place to stay and you've been on a plane for 6 something hours. It's cool. Whatever. Going on the pub crawl, singing karaoke at the gay bar, and playing card games with a bunch of (drunk) Scotsman and Urugayans was all very fun, and I wouldn't change those memories for the world (even the walking home from the gay bar wasted, cutting my foot on a piece of glass in the road, and bleeding on the bathroom floor). It was all a learning/growing experience. And in a weird way it kind of got me ready for Paris, even though it is a different language and culture. I guess it's part of the whole being abroad, away from everything you know thing.
Upon arrival to Paris, there were some bumps in the road, but more or less it's all coming together. The first week of classes is almost over, and we have some fun stuff planned for the weekend. The Louvre is free tomorrow night for us young-ins, and then it's off to Versailles in the morning. I want to go to a club, but that stuff doesn't really matter to me as much anymore. I mean I'd like to drink just because it's fun and there is always a funny story to go along with it, but it's just not a priority anymore. I have to be in tip top shape if I want to see everything in Paris. Goodness gracious there is a lot of stuff here. Yesterday we went to Place de la Concorde and just getting off the metro (I keep wanting to call it "the tube") there was SO much to see. You look one way and there's the Eiffel Tower, another way is the Louvre, over there the National Assemblie. It was crazy, but so FREAKIN' cool!!
I'm going to write as much as I can, but I'm going to try to live as much as I can too. So Steph and Ck (and Maryam eventually), you'll probably just have to wait until I get back to hear all about it (besides I'm not going to post the REALLY juicy stuff anyway). But that's cool because I'm home (in Ohio) for over 2 weeks! I miss everyone, and I wish that everyone could be here, experiencing this all with me. So save up your money kids, and the next time I'm in Europe you'll be by my side. Until then A bientot, I'm out.
