Smash episode 6 and 7 - a twofer…

Yep, it has finally happened and I’ve fallen behind in my mini reviews. I’d like to say that it is because I am doing exciting and interesting things, but unfortunately it is merely a combination of being busy (in the dull grey world of non-exciting and not in the least interesting things) and my own all-encompassing laziness.

I liked Chemistry, although I hated its show tune.

Potted highlights: Ivy’s wakeup call - I can think of nothing worse than being dragged from unconsciousness by someone perched at the end of the bed singing at me, regardless of whether they are a Broadway starlet or not. I can understand Ivy having to practise the song for the day’s rehearsal; however she gives the impression of just being that perky that early - which to my mind is wrong.

Speaking of wrong, Derek is a bad bad man - although I suspect it may be payback for the early morning singing.

Speaking of bad, I found Ivy’s hallucination genuinely creepy. Which I realise is insane in a fluffy show about musical drama, but it made me go a bit :0

Speaking of fluffy, I love Eileen recruiting Ellis and friend as minions and getting cosy with her new barman.

Speaking of cosy, I thought Julia and Michael’s saucy scene was very well done (although, ewwww - people have to sit on that sofa!).

Speaking of ewwww, Ellis may have been toppled from his pinnacle of evilness as Derek is a bad bad man.

The Workshop

Disappointing filler episode. In the interest of full disclosure I have never heard of Bernadette Peters (I sometimes feel this show is wasted on me), but I did like her as Ivy’s overbearing mother. I didn’t care about Karen’s song recording opportunity or Michael’s tearful break-up song, possibly harsh but definitely fast forwarded. I could also have lived without the comedy plumber scenes, although it was worth it for seeing Eileen all riled up. On the plus side, I’m surprised glad John made it another 2 weeks - he’s still adorable and I’ll be sad to see him go. I also liked Michael and Julia ‘reading’ the script and then Derek adopting their lines.

Random thoughts:

I didn’t think it was outrageous for Derek to tell Ivy to buck up her ideas in the interval. Well done Karen for sticking with her commitments. It’s nice that Tom has given Julia an escape clause re Michael (although, in the real world would that not lead to all sorts of lawsuits?). Hooray that Ivy finally got some validation from her mum. Ellis needs to start appearing and disappearing in a puff of smoke, or developing a maniacal laugh, something to mark out his evilness (although I’m glad Eileen sees through him). I spent far too much time dwelling on the idea that the successful people have huge giant beds, while poor struggling Karen and Ivy have tiny wee beds in their tiny wee apartments. I’m sorry to say that getting secret messages via the bed arrangements was pretty much the high point for me, overall I found this one a bit meh (although I did enjoy seeing the musical come together - even though I guess an overhaul is coming next week).

tellybox, smash
