May 22, 2011 21:33

From corrielle and potc_discussion originally and various friends more recently.

Day 1. What were your first impressions of PotC back when you first saw CotBP?
Day 2. What's a cool/interesting/favorite piece of pirate/navy/PotC stuff you own? Both here
Day 3. If you make fanworks, link to a piece of your work that you're especially proud of. If you don't make fanworks, link to a piece you're especially proud of finding. ;-) Here
Day 4. What are your hopes for the new film? What are you most looking forward to?
Day 5. If you could bring one character from the first three movies back for OST, who would you choose? How would you write him or her in? Both here
Day 6. Tell about a favorite/funny/happy memory of your involvement in the PotC fandom. Here

Day 7. I'm assuming we'll all see the movie somewhere around here… Describe your initial reaction in 100 400 words or less.
Before I start my review, one wee caveat. The second of my trilogy of weddings was last night, so I may have been ever so slightly hungover during today's showing (popcorn and cola isn't a conventional hangover cure, nor does it act as one...)

Having said that though, I liked it. It was quite a different beast than the last three (as expected), and moving away from the original trilogy didn’t really hurt too much. It was good that Jack was again the focus, there were indeed big noisy set pieces and it galloped along at a fair clip.

What did I like?
I liked the mermaids, they were indeed very cool, and I liked Blackbeard’s supernaturalness (although this really should have been explored more). Actually all the supernatural stuff was great - I especially liked the ships in bottles (how or why? Who knows or cares?). I’m glad Gibbs is still Gibbs and thought the Jack/Angelica dynamic worked well. The fountain was well done, though I’m not sure the ramifications of that whole thing was well-thought out, and the London escape was good fun.

What didn’t I like?
I didn’t really buy Barbossa as a privateer, mind you he was never my favourite villain, I didn’t get the point of the zombies and I don‘t believe Syrena would want to save anyone (except perhaps Philip at a push).

Other stuff
The new love interests didn’t really have much to do, they weren’t front and centre enough to care about (although I’d like to think Syrena did save Philip in the end).

I’m not convinced Gillette actually dies. Groves definitely buys it, but I thought Gillette escaped. At least there's someone in a Navy uniform, round about where Gillette fell, dragging himself off in the background. I don't for a moment think he'll be back in the next one, but I don't think he died outright. (Of course I'm not ruling out bad continuity, supernatural happenings or else just my dodgy eyes - especially since everyone else thinks he died.) Then again, as I keep saying, death doesn't actually seem to stop anyone for long in Pirates, so the Navy lads will doubtlessly ride again. Speaking of which, I still miss Norrington :(

In conclusion - it's a big, dumb old adventure. Worth a couple of hours of your time - go have fun, I did.
