Story: The Train Job

Feb 10, 2014 17:49

This is to my own prompt to my January Bingo Prompt call.

Title: The Train Job
Warnings: Someone says tarnation
Length: 289 words
Genre/Setting: Western

"Those mad geniuses, I have to find out how they pulled it off."

"You already said they boarded the train and herded you all off at gunpoint. What else is there to understand?"

"Not that Sheriff. It's just it didn't make sense before. It still doesn't, not really, but now I know what they wanted."

"Ezekiel, have you been in the sun too long? You're not making a lick of sense."

"Look, I already told you it was the politest train robbery I've heard of, right? Sure they had guns on us but they simply herded us all out of the cars as apologetic as you can imagine. They even made sure all our baggage was off and even handed over the payroll lockbox the train company had on board, right?"

"It's mad certainly, but mad geniuses? Who robs someone without taking anything."

"That's just it Sheriff. They had us out and on the tracks behind the train. Then they took the train and kept going. Now you just said you and your deputies were riding down the track because the Sheriff in Cinnabar telegraphed asking for help with the Cole Gang, right?"

"And we'll have to head out soon. What in tarnation are you trying to say?"

"Did you pass any trains before you reached us? You never mentioned seeing the nine o'clock."

Sheriff Nichols turned and looked down the track. "They couldn't have... There are no turn offs anywhere between Cinnabar and Onion Creek."

"They stole the train Sheriff. I can't think how they got it off the tracks but those mad geniuses stole the train. I can't think how and I can't think why and it's going to drive me batty until I do."
