I found out about this wonderful charity thing from
crazycatladymel (who's always doing something amazingly generous with her skills): The
Red Scarf Project 2007.
Here's a summary from the Project's blog:
"The Red Scarf Project, a project of the Orphan.org, collects red scarves (and other unisex colors) to send in Valentine's Day care packages to college students who have aged out of foster care. These brave young people are going it on their own and trying to improve their lives and the community by attending college. The care packages are welcome tokens of encouragement to young people who otherwise receive little to no mail. Your scarf should be soft (any material), unisex design, and approximately 60 inches long by 5 to 8 inches wide."
I'm in. I hit Michael's the other day and got two skeins of Lion Brand Wool-ease in bright red with speckles. I think knitting red scarves during the upcoming dreary winter months sounds like an excellent pick-me-up :)
Pass the word to your fellow knitters! This is a bandwagon that's worth jumping upon.
Oh, and I didn't forget about my prior charity knitting. I'm still churning out wee preemie hats that Hubby mocks for their odd shape (they look normal when folded up at the brim). I'll keep doing those until I run out of baby yarn.
