OK, my last post was awful. I really shouldn't have posted so late at night. I only meant to say I'm happy things are good! Instead it turned into a discussion on the value of history. I know that I am not the only one in my group involved in history or writing and I hope my endless harping on these things has not offended anyone. A friend managed to put it very well for me the other day. It is the person that makes the career and not the other way around. It is myself and my personal development I have been talking about when I discuss these careers so intimately connected with my identity, and not the careers themselves, which can be as useful and vital as the person is. Still this is the kind of thing which really belongs in my personal journal - badly written mind garbage spit out on a page in order to help me make sense of my own thoughts. That some actually read that mush and responded without being totally convinced I am a crazy person is proof what awesome friends I have. I read over it again and was disgusted with myself! You see what I mean when I say some things cannot be put into words? And I really should have proof read. I am still trying to get the hang of this whole live journal thing. From now on I'll try to bring up things of interest to everyone.

First of all mark your calendars everyone. As if they had nothing better to do Congress has officially declared May 13th Frank Sinatra Day.

Who else is totally pissed off at the pigs who vandalized Stone Henge? They have to have been foreigners/tourists. My history professor claims that though Britain is filled with barrows and other megalithic sites they aren’t guarded because first of all the British seem to be the law and order types but also because they have an instinctive sense of these places as significant to their heritage. They remain untouched. Plus those guys must have had some guts to vandalize STONE HENGE - I admit I'm a little on the superstitious side, but these places reek of the Otherworld! Anyone would think twice before touching them!

I am also pissed off that though CO2 was named a pollutant by the Supreme Court over a year ago, the EPA chief (the same one who denied California’s stricter vehicle emissions limits I believe) still hasn’t decided if it is a danger to the public. Apparently the decisions is too “complex and far-reaching” to hurry the decision so he is leaving it for the next EPA chief - ?

Furthermore, the California National Parks made the endangered landmarks list. Hopefully this will help to continue to garner attention now that the parks have their funding for another year and the danger is liable to be forgotten, with us assuming the parks are safe now.

However, there is also some environmental hope. I am science ignorant, and I know a lot of you are science knowledgeable. So I was hoping for some opinions on second generation biofuel crops. The giant reed was described as “environmentally friendly” but there are still fears about its invasiveness. Most second generation crops are essentially weeds. But I am sure every gardener and farmer is used to battling weeds. I understand that this could cause problems if the crop is not native but isn’t it possible to find a useful native second generation biofuel crop for each area where biofuel crops are grown? Is their invasiveness really so problematic? Does it not balance against the problems caused by using corn?

Also VERY interesting, did anyone see that article on the earthquake in China? about the disasters that have been happening consistently from the beginning of the year? Apparently 8 is a very important number in Chinese culture so they scheduled the opening of the Games for 8-8-08 at 8 pm. A snowstorm happened on January 25th (1+2+5=8), the Tibetan uprising occurred on March 14 (3+1+4=8), and the earthquake happened on May 1 88 days before the games (5+1+2=8), all three events together equaling 8-8-08. It definitely mixes with all the other disasters that have been occurring lately, natural and manmade, to make one think harder about Nostradamus and the Mayan prophesies regarding 2012. I have long subscribed to the idea that the end of the world simply means a transformation - that we will reach a new age of enlightenment. But then one thinks that Nostradamus said there would be a World War III, which brings to mind nuclear bombs. And the Mayans said that their end of the world needed to be stopped by the bringing together of the crystal skulls - needing to be stopped implies something bad and enlightenment isn’t bad. I was watching a program about the skulls the other day, and it made want to run right out and start looking for them no matter how much the presenters looked and sounded like looser reality TV attention seekers - not very convincing they knew what the hell they were talking about at all. They seemed to suggest that the crystal skulls are only being brought into the mainstream popular culture now as a result of the new Indiana Jones movie but does no one remember that bad superhero movie The Phantom?
