Chapter 2

Renee placed her backpack on the rack next to the door. she walked into the kitchen where she listened to her messages as she made a sandwhich.

*beep* "Hi Renee, its Tanner. I'm wondering if maybe you would... if you're not busy tonight... maybe go to a... a movie or... like a date.... ok bye." *beep*

"Gotta call back" Renee said before the next message started.

the kitchen was small, with black marble counters and floors. The walls were white with oak cabinets and a small black refridgerater (or fridge). The messages ended just as Renee finished putting away the jam. She then went back into the livving room, grabbed her backpack and walked into her room to do her homework and call Tanner.

Renee and her friends sat together at a booth in Johnny Rockets, talking about school and what it would be like to drive without their parents in the car. Suddenly, the lights in the restaurant went off, casting long dark shadows upon the marble floor. Behind the glass window, the moon shone brightly through the trees leaves, making the light dance around the restaurant. The room was totally empty, except for the booth with the friends in it. They stopped talking almost instantly, and looked around at each other as if asking what had happened. They waited for any signs of the lights to turn back on.

When they did not return, Livvie got up and walked to the door to see why they had turned off. Her small fingers wrapped around the brass handle and turned, but the door did not open.

“What the heck? Why isn't it opening??” she muttered under her breath.

“Livvie what's wrong?” Renee questioned looking away from Tanner.

“The door wont open, I think someone locked us in!” she said as she began to shake the door violently, trying to open it in case it was just stuck. When it still refused to open, Livvie returned to her seat.

“I’ll go see if maybe there is someone who could turn it back on. Stay here, if I don't return soon, Livvie can go look for me. Tanner, stay with Dawn.”

With those words, Renee got up and left.

Renee turned a corner, frantically looking for a light source of some kind. It was darker back there then it was in the dinning area, due to the fact that it had no windows or back up lights. Renee turned Just in time to see two dark figures move in the shadows. The first one ran from the spot as the second fell limply to the ground. Renee knew better than to call out, but she could barely see.

“Who’s there?”she called.

No one answered her call, so she walked over to the second figure on the floor, using her foot to locate his body. He was not moving or breathing as far as she knew, so she gently knelt beside him. She put her index and middle finger to his neck in search of a pulse, but instead of feeling skin, she felt a cold liquid flowing slowly from two open wounds. She rubbed the liquid between her fingers and looked up to see whoever the first figure was run around a corner. She got up and went after the figure, gently stepping over the dead person on the floor.

Back in the dinning area, the rest of the friends were waiting for Renee’s return when they heard a crash come from the kitchen in the direction Renee had gone. Livvie and Tanner got up at the same time, looked at each other, and started to talk all at once.

“What are you doing? Me? I’m going after Renee! You?”

“Hey, one at a time please!” Dawn said over the two.

“Renee said for YOU to stay with Dawn, not me. She told ME to go after her.” Livvie stated.

“But she is MY girlfriend! If she needs me, I’ll get her.” Tanner argued.

“But that’s my job, not yours. Now, sit down.” Livvie orderd. Tanner sat down, much to his dismay, and watched Livvie as she ran after Renee.

The shadowy figure was running fast, but Renee was staying right on its tail. It turned a corner, still followed by Renee, but it exited through a back door. Renee ran up to it just as the door closed. She wrapped her fingers around the knob, braced herself, and pulled. The door stayed where it was. she tried again, yet it still didn't budge. Frustration filled her as she turned. She started to walk away, but gave one last lingering glance to the door. Its brass handle showed brightly from the moonlight that flowed through the small glass window.
Renee turns back around and gasps. Livvie stood there in front of her.

“We heard a crash. We thought you might need help.” Livvie said.

“Sorry, it was dark. I tripped.” Renee apaligized.

“What are you doing back here any ways?” Livvie questioned.

“I saw someone go back here. I think it might have been a vampire, but they ran off before I saw them properly. They ran through that door.” Renee said, pointing to the door behind her. Livvie gave Renee a strange look as she walked past her to test the door behind her. She gave it a quick tug, but the door did not move. She walked back to Renee’s side, and faced her.

“ No one could have gone through that door, Renee. It’s locked tight. Are you sure you didn't imagine it?” Livvie suggested.

“Livvie, they went through that door and slammed it in my face. I’m pretty sure I didn't imagine it.” Renee said coldly.

Livvie smiled at her friend, replied that she was probably right, and they walked back to the dinning area together.

As they entered the room, the light returned. Dawn and Tanner got up from their seats to join Renee as Livvie went to check the door. This time, the door opened with ease. The group left the restaurant and walked home together, letting Renee explain what she had found.

On the roof of the restaurant, hiding in the shadows, was Dan. He was crouching low so no one could see him, but just enough so he could see them. He was thinking to himself about what had just happened, how he had tried so hard to ruin Renee’s date, but didn't succeed. Then he thought about his excape. How he was so close to being caught, but he was lucky this time. He had slipped out of the door just in time, because if it had been one second later, he would not have made it. He ran the image of it in his mind. Renee chasing him, and watching as he slipped out the door. Now, he hides in the shadows like a cat, watching as his one desire walks away with his one hate. He wondered what it would be like if Tanner was not hers, but she was his. He pondered the thought until the sight of the group faded into nothing more than a mere dot in the distance. Then he got up, brushing himself off as he did so.

Just then, Dawn appeared almost out of nowhere. She stood next to Dan as he stared at the moon. Then she spoke.

“I know it was you.” Dawn said so he’d know she was there.

“What was me?” Dan asked, pretending he had no idea whaat she was talking about.

“You were the one who killed that chef, and turned off the lights and locked us in. Renee saw you run away. She chased you.” she explained.

“Did she say she saw me, or do you think she saw me?” Dan questioned slyly.

“I know it was you she saw. You should stop stalking her if you don't want to be accused. You can't change her mind about who it is she likes, you know that, don't you?” Dawn said with some attitude.

“First of all, you don't know anything about me or what I do! Second, I don't stalk her. Third, its none of your business if I like her or not, now is it? So why don't you go take a hike?!” Dan snapped.

“It’s my business if its my friend you going after!” Dawn glared.

Dan gave her a small ‘mph’ before replying as he stood at the edge of the roof.

“Its none of my business what you care about, so it shouldn't be yours either if I choose to care about her.” je stated hottly, and with those last words walked off the ledge, turned into a bat, and flew off into the darkness, yet again thinking about his only desire.

Dawn stood staring at him until he too disappeared into the darkness. Then she gracefully walked off the ledge, landing on her feet with a soft ‘thud’, and went to catch up with the rest of the group, hoping all the while they would not ask her where she had been, or what had happened.
