We have a new kind of vampires roaming in the pages of the Young Adult section.
They aren’t your usual creatures. Actually, they are evolved vampires over the centuries. They are known now as "Parasite-Positive." Ironically, they don’t like to be called vampires anymore. Peeps is enough. They don’t like anything they love anymore. That’s how it is easy to catch one. They have superhuman strength and befriends rats.
How do we know all this? Cal, a peep carrier, tells us all this. Cal has the characteristics/powers of a Peep, but he is still sane like a human. Unfortunately as a carrier, he will pass the disease to girls. This means Cal can no longer be with any girl again because, with one simple kiss, he will turn her into a peep.
The reader will also find out that he becomes obsessed to find Morgan. Morgan the girl who drank Bahamalama-Dingdongs with Cal one night at Dick Bars. The girl who made Cal into who he is.
Cal helps these Night Watchers, peep carriers like him. The Night Watchers are known to capture all the peeps.
Now there is a new twist in the story, something that catches Cal and his new friend Lacey by surprise Lacey is a curious and bold journalism student who so happens living in Morgan's old apartment. The apartment will also bring an interesting role into the story.
This book is set for high school students; however, anyone who likes a thrilling vampire story will enjoy this book. Also, Peeps may have a Buffy the Vampire intake, but the author Scott Westerfeld who wrote books So Yesterday, both the Uglies and Midnight series, takes this book to a whole different level. It has suspense, horror, and a little romance. Westerfeld does a great job with bringing each characters into the book, especially Cal. The chapters themselves are interesting. Even though it is Cal telling the story throughout the book, Cal is going back and forth between the present tense of his story and the scientific and biology of the peeps. If you read or have read Peeps, another good read would be its sequel Last Day. This will introduce new characters and a crazy story begins with peeps who are musicians.
