Angel

Lina saw him walking down the street with his thumbs hooked in his jeans pockets. He was tall, with shortish dark hair, and his lips were moving as if singing. As he walked closer to where she lounged at a table at an outdoor café, she could see the cables running from his ears to the pocket of his dark blue tee shirt. She smiled as the aura around him constantly changed colors - all warm in tone. He wasn’t really looking at anyone, just half focused as he walked, singing along with whatever song was playing. Coming up to her table, he stopped and stared at her. Self consciously, she reached a hand to her face to see if something was there, then non-chalantly tucked stray hairs behind her ear. He leaped over the little fence and sat down at her table.

Startled, she said hello and received a quizzical look. He smiled and reached to take the plugs out of his ears.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi back,” she responded. She smiled back at him as the colors surrounding him brightened with more oranges and yellows.

“Do you always have feathers in your hair?” he asked, tilting his head a little bit.

Startled, she reached to her hair, but she didn’t find anything. “Uhm," she started, “noooooo.” His smile was infectious and she couldn’t help but grin at him, even though she was confused.

Reaching out, he pulled a soft white feather that had a faint glimmer of a multitude of colors from the side of her head. Putting her hand out, she gasped lightly as he stroked it against her palm. Looking back up at him, she asked “how many more do I have? Can others see them? Do you know you’re surrounded by gorgeous colors?”

Beaming at her, he responded, “Yeah, I do. When I saw the feathers, it made me stop, and I figured you could see the colors. You don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?” she replied, as he moved to hold her other hand.

“We’re angels, and judging by the way the colors shimmer in the feathers and the way you see mine, we were made for each other. By the way, what’s your name? Mine is Gabe.”

“Lina, my name is Lina. It’s short for Angelina.” She looked deep into his eyes and saw the sparkle. Softly breathing out, she said “Angelina. Angel. And you’re Gabe, short for Gabriel, right?”

Nodding, Gabe stood, and pulled her to her feet. Hugging her, they floated up into the sky, leaving the mortal world behind.
