musings of big sis' food tour

i'm back!

this food blog has been woefully ignored for over a year.  what with all the myspace and facebook and linked in and goodreads... i can't keep up. must be because i'm finally in my 30s and not hip with the youngster anymore ;)

but now i've been delegated the duty of blogging about my sister's food tour of the bay, since she's sadly leaving us after an accidental two year stay. during these 22 month, she's transformed from a hippiephobic artsy fartsy almost hipster to a yoga obsessed, organic meat eating, public transportation enthusiast whose only doctor is an old school hippie bartender-turned-chiropractor.

and her food tour included:

koi palace
korean place in TL that i can't remember the name of
potluck style sunday brunch
jai yun
secret sushi

first, koi palace was an organizer's nightmare. especially since i was the organizer and didn't do much organizing. a group of 18 (aye!) gathered at the daly city hotspot on a steamy sunday morning. given the notice of a 1.5 hour wait, we proceeded to take multiple outings to the nearby evil chain store coffee shop (you know the one). i tried valorously to prevent a mass defection to the outback steakhouse next door, and deemed it a success when folks backed down and took a detour outing to the nearby ranch 99 instead. and the food? when it finally came time to eat, i think i was so hungry, styrofoam plates would have tasted msg-good.

i'll skip the korean restaurant that i cant' remember the name of, but will say that the BSG-inspired blue martinis vaughn and i made afterwards were not quite a success. only when we added some OJ to the third batch (and it became a BSG-inspired green puke colored martini), was it even drinkable.

sunday brunch was a gluttonous delight! highlights: tiramisu cupcakes, custard cherry french toast, tater tots, aka toe-ter tots, and pomegranate mimosas.  we rolled home.

jai yun followed an evening of debauchery and chemically enhanced happiness.  it was low-key, and i think by the end of the meal, we all kinda wished we hadn't been so cheap and ordered the least expensive prix fixe.  the table next to us had a delicious smelling roasted pork thigh and steamed/braised whole fish.   next time we'll dish out the big bucks.  even so, we had yummy small plates of yummy things.  i can't remember the details (was coming down from the enhanced happiness) but karoleen took pictures.

secret sushi... oh secret sushi... siiiiigh.  it was a big expedition involving citycarshare, coordinating multiple busy-bee schedules, luring of SFcentric folks to the east bay, and several crossings of bodies of water.  but alas... we had one person too many, and none were willing to sacrifice for the good of the team (jk!)  in the end, we crossed more water and ended up at angel fish.  the hamachi and albacore were especially fresh, and the place passed kenji's japanese ancestry test.  this week, knowing the secret number (3) we try again.

so to wrap up, lots of good eating in celebration of a wang sisters imminent departure, and i'm broke.

now with the food tour almost over and especially in light of the global food crisis (and my growing guilt over the amount of meat i consume), i've been inspired to become a mikewong-style vegetarian.  i'm starting out with a weekly quota of 3 major and 6 minor exceptions, and hope to whittle that down to 2 and 4 by the end of the year.

p.s. we were in stockton yesterday for v's brother's birthday, and almost went to the world famous stockton asparagus festival!!!!  sadly, we were running late and didn't have enough time... but the asparagus festival!!!!
