Stupid Cashier

Mar 26, 2009 16:45

I was going to write about this the other day, but didn't.  I don't really know why, probably because I was really annoyed about it, I'm still kind of annoyed about it.  But the basic moral of the story is, I can't stand stupidity.

I was at the grocery store the other day, buying some stuff to make a stew.  Delicious stew in the end, I must say.  But the point isn't that I'm a delicious cook, the point is I can't stand stupidity.

So I picked out all my stuff and I was in line to go and pay.  This is when I should have known things weren't going to go well.  The cashier's supervisor was over and telling her how to fill out the forms to have the order in front of me delivered.  This isn't a difficult thing to do.  It includes fields for name, address, phone number and the box numbers so they know which things are being delivered where.  It's not difficult, and it makes carbon copies, one copy for the store, one for the customer, and one for the person who does the deliveries.  This is not difficult...apparently for her it was, and the annoyed supervisor ended up doing it himself.

The cashier then starts to scan my items through the register.  This isn't a difficult thing to do.  It's not rocket science, I mean, I know it involves lasers and computers and reading information from a magical series of lines...but it's not rocket science.  And when something won't scan properly because the label's fucked up, you don't need to try for several minutes to flatten the label out properly to scan it, and in the process, start scratching up the lines to make it even more unreadable.  There's a code, it's a bunch of numbers, just type them into the register, and it'll do it for you.  It's hardly anything to do, but she apparently didn't think of this until I suggested it.

Then she started packing things into my grocery bag, I brought one rather large fabric bag (because I care about saving the earth or whatever by using a reusable bag whenever I remember.)  Apparently no one taught this girl how to properly pack a bag, she just tossed everything in wherever it would seem to go, and put the bread on top where it was being partially crushed by the bags of chips which were being pressed into it from the side.  A problem easily solved in about 1 minute of repacking the bag with a little bit of planning where everything fit properly and my bread wasn't being crushed into a giant bread ball.

But the most frustrating part was when it was time to pay.  I was due 34 dollars and change back after paying.  $34 is not difficult to do.  Here's a hint, it's usually best to go with the smallest number of bills and coins required unless you really have a good reason to do otherwise.  So first she grabs a ten, and I stupidly think "Okay, next comes the twenty" but no...she reaches for another ten, then stops.  I stupidly think "Oh yes, she figured out a ten and a twenty is better than three tens."  She then proceeds to grab from this rather full register, loaded with tens and twenties, 4 of her last 7 five dollar bills.  I wasn't sure if I felt more like slapping my forehead out of frustration, or her, out of frustration.  Then she grabbed two toonies, and the rest of my change.  She counted it again, then handed it to me and the receipt and said "You should check to make sure that's right."  At this point, I was definitely leaning towards slapping her instead of myself.  So I look at the change and quickly count it in my head and make sure the important stuff is right, the $34 because who cares about the rest.  And then I go and put it in my purse and she says "Oh, did I do it wrong, did I give you too much?"

God I'm surprised I didn't slap her.  I felt like yelling at her for being such a dumb bitch.  If she hadn't been such an idiot, and just given me a twenty and a ten instead of trusting her ability to count to FOUR to give me the required number of five dollar bills, we wouldn't have this issue.  But no, I just said "No, it's right," then grabbed my bag and left.

God stupid people annoy me.
