"But we didn't ask for this job."
"We didn't have to - it's built in. Has been ever since the dawn of time... when a few wild dogs took it upon themselves to watch over man... to bark when he's in danger... to run and play with him when he's happy... to nuzzle him when he's lonely. That's why they call us man's best friend."
- Chance and Shadow, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (Duwayne Dunham, 1993)
IT'S BEEN TOO LONG.
You all know it has. I'd usually apologise profusely except I recalled that this isn't a prequisite. And that weekly blabbers aren't really a necessity. And that I have the most legitimate reasons to not be posting any recent entries.
Let's start with pointing out that I had my French New Wave essay due on the 4th of April.
And continue by also pointing out that I had a Canadian Cinema seminar about direct address in Double Happiness and I've Heard the Mermaids Singing to present on the same day.
Followed the day after by a French presentation on cyberintimidation (cyber-bullying).
And the day after that by a Michael Winterbottom essay for the Directors course.
Then I had an Astronomy final that coming Sunday.
And a Canadian Cinema final the following day.
Then I spent my nine days off studying and job-searching - 'cause however much I wish it wasn't, it's that time of year again - before today's European Cinema exam.
If that's not a good excuse for not posting any recent entries, I don't know what is.
And within those timeframes I have stirred some new as well as recurring obsessions. So everything makes sense, I'll go chronologically.
Do you see my userpic? Do ya do ya? That is the legendary but highly unknown show referred to as SPACE CASES. If you're unfamiliar to it, it's essentially Star Trek for pre-teens, which at first glance sounds immensely juvenile not to mention lame, but the series surprises through its creators Peter David and Bill Mumy (yes, THAT Bill Mumy!), who present substantial themes, compelling characters, a not-too-serious script (which undoubtedly provides three-quarters of the fun), and an overwhelmingly-detailed bible of the history of the show's settings and characters... could anything suit better the mind of a geek? Sadly, Nickelodeon doesn't find the show "popular" enough for a DVD release, but curious individuals are in luck for all the episodes have been VHS-ripped onto YouTube! And if it's your cuppa tea, your icing on the cake, turns your crank, whatever, and you become almost as geeky about it as I am, then you are once again in luck, because LJ has
rigelianculture ! Yes, I'm totally advertising XD
The Space Cases obsession rearose during my last week of classes, which was when all the above crap was due... so yeah, you can tell how good THAT went. "I have this essay to write! Awwww, but I wanna watch 'Break On Through to the Other Side'!" *someone in the world randomly plays The Doors* But in all seriousness, the last day was actually a lot more emotional than I thought it would be, I suppose 'cause some classmates are graduating so they were going to permanently leave all these professors and film screenings and group discussions and... damn, now I feel like I'M the one who's graduating! Definitely the hardest ones to leave from were my Directors and Canadian Cinema courses - Canadian Cinema was probably my least favourite film course of the semester (by no means does that mean I disliked the course or didn't love it, but the learning process wasn't as effective as my regular prof), but I've shared many a great conversations with the professor and fellow classmates, and seeing as the two classmates are either graduating or returning to Denmark (yes, I had a Danish exchange student in my film courses, it was pretty awesome), not being able to see them again was indeed saddening. The Directors course took me back to the beloved film tutorials of last year where we discussed the films we watched with considerable intensity, and boy are such experiences glorious - if there's one thing I love as much as watching films, it's talking about them, and such discussion sessions makes one feel that no opinion they can give is a wrong one, so it shouldn't be too much a surprise that this course meant a lot to me even if not all the films were enjoyable to watch. I also feel like I've gotten to know the professor really well, too, during this year (how could I not when she taught me for four courses? XD), and I didn't realise till then exactly how much I loved and appreciated her teaching methods, so I was compelled to tell her so at the end of class and she seemed quite thrilled about it. Both professors also surprised the classes with cake and Polish treats, and I felt so touched that I'm a little amazed I didn't tear up a little.
Enough with mushy stuff - once that week's fiasco ended, I suddenly found myself in the world of X-Men thanks to the Nostalgiama Critic and his recent review, and I'm currently working on watching Evolution and the original series back-to-back trying to introduce myself to the franchise in the least complex way possible. ... So explain to me why I'm watching these two back-to-back then? XD I also seem to have this thing for fuzzy blue men because Beast and Kurt are both my favourite characters (though are you really surprised with the former?), plus Gambit and Rogue whose interactions are quite stimulating to watch... and I probably like the whole thing for reasons similar to Space Cases, actually... go figure.
Then we finally get to today where after I completed my easier-than-I-thought exam I went around and followed up/applied to all the job positions I was interested in... all fourteen of them O_O Needless to say I'm exhausted, but Ry and I hung around at the two pet stores for a fairly long time, which has respawned my already-hungry yearning for a dog again. Which finally brings me to the opening quote.
I could probably go on, but I think my nonstop chatter has exhausted you all as much as I already am, so I will finish for now. Now you're all updated and you'll hear from me again in another three weeks... just kidding! I have one more exam after this and then I'm free to job-search and film and screenwrite and write and draw and vid and... wait, free to do what again? XD Well I'll have a summer anyway and I'll keep my fingers crossed to actually do productive things this summer. Hoh boy.
Till next time, cut!
