New level of newspaper sleaze

May 11, 2007 09:33

I was reading a copy of the Aberdeen Record, which someone thrust into my hands Metro-style, and noticed that there is a specially-targetted crossword puzzle for kids. Below it is a phone number for kids to call if they need help with the puzzle . . . at a cost of $1.20 per minute. I haven't noticed whether other papers have similar scams going.

Not in the sleaze category, but still quite curious . . . I went into W. H. Smith at the train station to buy provisions for the journey and they PAID me about a dollar to take a copy of the Independent. The way it actually worked was that if I would buy the Independent, the large bottle of water I was already purchasing would be free. What is going on here?
