Well, all's well that ends well.

Took my car in today to have the wheel looked at, and they were all impressed with the damage to my rim. Only the senior manager guy had ever seen damage like that before, and he'd only seen it once in 30+ years of working with cars. His guess is that I ran over a small piece of rebar or something leftover from recent road construction and that my front wheel kicked it back into -exactly- the wrong place so that it completely punctured my rear tire and then got shot through the rim. Super freak occurrence. And not warranty-able unfortunately.

A brand new rim would have been about $300 plus another $100 or so for a tire, plus labor. But it just so happened that they had a set of used wheels on hand that matched mine exactly. Somebody had just brought them in on a trade for some aftermarket wheels so they hadn't been there more than a day or two. Total random chance that they were there today. So they sold me one of those and the tire with it for $125. By some small miracle my Tire Pressure sensor was undamaged and my wheel center cap was in fine shape so they just yanked those off the old wheel and put them on the new-old wheel. With labor and other incidentals it was $165 total.

Normally I'd balk at spending nearly $200 in one go, but when you're bracing for $500, $165 is not too damn bad. And it's all done and dealt with now, thank goodness. I thought I did before, but now I'm positive that I like the Honda people. They were super nice and explained everything to me fully without being patronizing or obnoxious. And they washed my car too! My Dad says I should bring them cookies or something, haha. But I would feel kind of weird doing that.
