I know, I meant to update my journal a while ago. But today I actually feel like it. :) But I now realize that I didn't update all last quarter. It's not that I was busy, I was just a bit lazy, as per usual.
Having taken life drawing, I now feel a lot more comfortable with my skills. I think I've made some great strides since I started. But last quarter, at some point I kinda felt like things just "clicked," especiall after I discovered two materials that I like to use: woodless graphite and smudge sticks. I haven't seen the blending sticks at any other stores, but I'm sure somebody sells them. I think they'll last me a while though. Drawing naked people isn't that bad. I thought it was interesting. I still should be going to the night sessions they have each week. I'll go when it suits my schedule.
My illustrator class sucked. The teacher, in particular, was just really bad. As an artist, he's competent I suppose. But as an educator, well... epic fail. Honestly, I feel as though I learned more about Illustrator in two weeks from Mr. K than I did in a whole quarter from this joker. And on top of that, he only gave me (and most everyone else in the class, from my understanding) a C+. Now I know my work was much better than that! He brought my stellar GPA down to a 3.4. Bastard.
My art history and photoshop classes were fun. I'm taking the next course of art history this quarter with the same teacher. I like her; she has kind of a querky charm to her. I enjoyed my photoshop class, but I felt as though I didn't learn too much that was new to me there. But it's really a beginner's course, so I guess you can't expect too much. I was a bit surprised that my work was usually one of the best in the class. I guess that's good too.
I'm finally getting into my major-related classes. This quarter I've got Character & Object Design, Game Design & Gameplay, Art History II, and Algebra. Yeah, the bastards are making me take algebra. It basically covers the stuff we were supposed to learn in 9th grade. So it should be relatively simple. I also hafta take geometry at some point. I can't complain too much, considering that it's a sacrifice to be made for studying "the rockstar career," as Prof. Hernandez calls it. I've heard that the teacher for my character design class (Hernandez) is tough. But I don't think it's in the sense that I was afraid of. I think he just gives a heavy workload. I'd rather have that than an overly critical teacher. He seems to be pretty cool, which is good. He's pretty funny.
That's the desk I got for my birthday. I've added some better stuff to it since I took that pic. But that's basically it right there. I basically told my parents that if I could have one thing for my birthday, that'd be it. As it turns out, I really needed one, b/c as soon as I took all the stuff off my old desk and tried to move it, it basically fell apart. XD It lasted much longer than it should have. I REALLY <3 this new one. It's $150 at Ikea.
Just my TV setup. Nothin really new or special, but while I'm posting a few pics, might as well, right?
I hafta say the little shark dude Erica gave me makes for a perfect bodyguard for my precious compy. :D
This is Rhiannon, one of the assistant managers.
Took this a few months ago. Scooby was a real sport for this one, lol. He just looks too cute.
Scooby today, resting in his den/crate.
A scroll I got from some collector on LJ. I know they have a website.. I can get it if anyone's interested. But I think this one was the last they had.
One of the Wolf dreamcatcher portraits that I have. This is the 2nd that I purchased from a Native American store that used to be at the mall. It's since moved to Dulles Town Center. I think. It's called Albuquerque (sp?) East.
My Brawl poster that came with the game guide. GAWD I loooooooooooooove this game. I've played it almost every day since its release. It's just that good.
I just got a scanner to upload work with. I also ordered CS3 from this software site that offers student discounts. It hasn't shipped yet so I'm kinda mad. My parents are paying for both.. otherwise I wouldn't have bought them. I should consider myself lucky.
I entered a competition for a scholarship open only to students at the Art Institutes from Sony Online Entertainment and G.I.R.L. (Gamers in Real Life). If you win, you get a $10,000 scholarship and a 10 week internship at Sony Online Entertainment. The deadline for submissions is the end of May. So I've got lots of time to work on my application stuff. I dunno what my chances of winning are, but if I let that hold me back, then why bother even studying game design, right? You never know.
