Getting back to this.

July 2010

managed to get the Ra piece written without once resorting to quoting pieces out of "The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas". Given the difficulties I was having, I consider this a profound victory.
(A gigantic nuclear furrr-nace....)
Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 5:51pm
spent the day at the Lowell Folk Festival with K, E, and the babe. Tired, sore, reasonably content. KJ got a short nap, bopped to some music, ate some deep-fried fish (I think it was?), and charmed everyone as usual.
Friday, July 23, 2010 at 2:09pm
beams. Baby just signed "sleep" to me. Okay, sweetie, naptime!
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 6:54pm
quote of the days: "Most people just don't think about how complicated standing is until they either have a baby or design a robot."
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 6:37pm
adds to the baby's musical favorites (previously containing stuff like "hip-hop" and "trippy electronica") a new entry: Sousa.
Monday, July 19, 2010 at 5:11pm
disapproves of the new baby habit of combining "I like to bang my head on the wall!" with "I show affection by letting my head go thunk on your shoulder", leading to displays of enthusiastic affection in the form of vigorous headbutts in the face.
Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 2:35pm
sighs. I wanted to go to church today, and then KJ had me awake every hour, on the hour. This is not a rhetorical exaggeration, I looked at the clock every time and by about four had hit a profound level of "Okay, aside from how horrible I feel, this is kind of hilarious."
Needless to say, when I handed her off to the other parents at seven-thirty, I went the hell back to bed.
Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 12:02am
has let the baby roll off of me to sleep in the middle of the bed. She just reached out one hand, made grasping motions in the air, and let it fall. I wonder whether she's dreaming of nicking the remote again.
Monday, July 12, 2010 at 12:19pm
got the manuscript up over thirty kilowords before going to bed last night. On the one hand, I don't know how I'm going to be able to get this done in and around all the babywrangling and the rest of life. On the other hand ... I got it up over thirty thousand freakin' words so far, I can do it.
Friday, July 9, 2010 at 1:48am
is sitting in bed with the baby snuggled against one hip and the cat snuggled against the other. I should go to sleep and all, but this is just nice, and I want to enjoy it for a while.
Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 6:20pm
is impressed. The baby liked the matzo ball soup at the deli we went to SO MUCH that she learned how to sign "more" so I would keep feeding it to her.
Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 1:43pm
is so perturbed by the announcement saying that I can totally use Twitter or update Facebook from the gate that I am logging in to update Facebook with my response. IM IN UR AIRPORTZ BRINGIN UR META.
August 2010
Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 4:58pm
gets handed a DVD of The Muppet Show by the baby. I, uh. Put in an episode for her.
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 6:04pm
has two books left to read for the manuscript (can't say 'review' 'cos these are the ones I bought when I was in Portland). And a baby who bonks her face against people and proclaims, loudly, "MWAH!"
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 3:29pm
achieves babynap at last! Now I can do something about the horror that is the kitchen.
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 12:48pm
has spent the last hour and a half failing to get the baby to take a nap in a wide variety of exciting ways.
Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 11:13pm
HAS FINISHED THE JAN ASSMANN BOOK.
I have beer.
Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 2:19pm
has removed all the brackets from the manuscript now. (Dad will understand the significance of this.)
(Well, aside from the ones that go [ ** PUT ART HERE ** ].)
Friday, August 27, 2010 at 12:16pm
finds once again that the deeper I dig into my Egyptiana the more Craft there is there. I wonder a lot if other people see the similarities that I do, or would if they were studying the same things.
In other news, the babe is enthusiastically gnawing on a piece of bacon.
Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 6:34pm
finally makes it past the magic-mushroom-obsessed portions of this book and into the actual practical applications of the Amduat. I really hope that when I'm riding my hobbyhorses I'm less ... repetitive.
(Four hours down, eight to go. Baby's awake, though, so no more work until someone gets home to take over.)
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 2:12pm
snorts at the current book for research. "Osiris's birthday is said to be December 25" ... wow, Christmas in July!
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 1:11pm
is not having a good baby management day. Fortunately, she is asleep now, so maybe I can make work progress....
Monday, August 23, 2010 at 3:18pm
has a vaguely sick baby. This means she wants to spend 80% of her waking time and 50% of her sleeping time nursing.
Friday, August 20, 2010 at 9:34pm
returns from the opening of the Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival. I think I really kind of want to move to Lowell.
Friday, August 20, 2010 at 11:36am
returns from the babydoc. Baby: still gigantic.
(31", 24 and a half pounds.)
Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:22am
is awake. I was up until threeish because I got on a major roll or the manuscript. So, of course, the baby is AWAKE!!!1! at 6:30.
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 2:08pm
and
teinedreugan are seriously discussing whether KJ is on the large side of the "tiny" size category or the small side of the "small" size category. When Nerds Breed.
Monday, August 16, 2010 at 5:14pm
checks on the baby. Who is sitting quietly in the other half of the room, solemnly flipping through "The Portable Life 101".
Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 2:12pm
did an organising pass for the revision phase of the manuscript. I went through the heaps of research books and picked out the ones that I need to go through again to polish the manuscript, and put the rest of them away.
End tally: sixteen books and a clear side table.
Friday, August 13, 2010 at 12:59am
HAS FINISHED THE FIRST DRAFT.
Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we revise.
Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:32am
was up far too late last night.
BUT.
"Being up far too late" means "two things left on the to-do list for the first draft of the manuscript". Also, I broke forty kilowords.
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2:30pm
manages to get the overtired baby down for her third nap of the day (admittedly, the second one was Not Successful). Maybe my misanthropy levels will drop from their current high-toxicity state now ....
Friday, August 6, 2010 at 3:31pm
watches the baby push her little walker pushcart around to the other side of the room. WE HAVE ASSISTED BIPEDAL LOCOMOTION.
Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 12:59pm
writes one part of a section of the manuscript, realises she needs to have another section (another two parts, in other words), writes one part of that. So I have the same number of action items on my to-do list as I did two hours ago, and about two thousand more words done.
Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 5:29pm
let the baby make her first book purchase today. She climbed a two-step stepstool up to a crate of board books, selected one on dinosaurs, and climbed back down to the floor with it.
Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 9:13pm
has bright green baby tracks across her living room floor. Kevin says, "YOU are cleaning this up!" I laugh and laugh and laugh. This is truly one of my most excellent mothering ideas.
Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 2:51pm
so: The baby is having an exciting birthday! We went to church and she got birthday wishes from the congregation! She had a nice nap! She found her shiny new shape sorter and has been sorting shapes! She is wearing the shirt Alice gave her! We are invstigating her toddler wagon now, so she may consider learning to toddle.
September 2010
Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 12:39pm
gave the babe a piece of toast to chew on. She comes over with her toast and brandishes it. "Toast!" I say. SHe proceeds to ... grab my toes.
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 4:18pm
is having a much better today than the yesterday, and it has been improved further by the baby waking up from her nap so I could change out of my pee-soaked pyjamas. (Sigh.)
Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 8:18pm
determines once again that when she's been exerting herself, what her body winds up wanting afterwards is limeade and potato chips.
Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 7:02pm
has a new babygame: walk to mama! then to daddy! then to mama! then to daddy! K and I are charmed.
Monday, September 20, 2010 at 12:02pm
introduces the Impending Overlord to the world. For while I was packing some history books she was "helping" - throwing books into the box - up until she found Machiavelli's +The Prince+. At which point she sat down and paged through it for a bit. (Then she threw it in the box.)
Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 8:44pm
has one for the grandparents!

went to the local playground again, and the babe had loads of fun climbing up the slide and then sliding down again. We decided to stop not because she was done, but because she decided that she wanted to elaborate the game by leaping into K's arms halfway down ....
Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 9:01pm
let the baby steal her phone briefly. Suddenly it ... started playing music and ... she sat there bopping triumphantly and ... when I got it back from her it was open to a website that said "You have one (1) ringtone."
Monday, September 13, 2010 at 10:06pm
OMG BABYSTEPS (wobbly, and she refuses to repeat)
Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 12:09pm
has now been to a Unitarian revival meeting. (With brass band and confetti cannons.) Who knew? I do like The First Parish in Bedford Unitarian Universalist....
Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 11:29am
reports a definite molarly presence in the babymouth. We appear to be skipping canines for now.
In other baby-related news (originally typoed 'noises'), she appears to be shouting 'BABY!' a lot. This appears to mean, roughly, "YATTA!"
Also, Kevin reports this conversation: "*signs eat eat*" "Do you want to go see Mama?" "*pokes Kevin in the nipple*" Communication with the babian life form continues hilarious.
Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 8:17am
sighs. Though of course today she's up at quarter of eight, after fighting sleep with violence until past one.
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 3:35pm
does more packing. Discovers that the pen she was using to mark boxes is not where she left it. "Where did you put the pen, sweetie?" A small baby face looks up from where she was dismantling the DVD shelves, there is a pause, and then a vigorous *thrusts Sharpie upwards in triumphant possession*. What can one say?
(I said "Thank you.")
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 2:20pm
has many things that I want to do! Important things, some of them, or religious things, or work-related stuff for the new manuscript! ... I also have a lapful of extremely cute napmonster. Woops.
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 10:00am
leaves the baby to sleep, because ... ... I don't want to wake her up even if she needs to be awake at a reasonable hour just to keep the scheduling workable. I think she got my preferred sleep schedule, either by nature or by the osmosis of me being primary caregiver....
Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 7:26pm
finishes this revision pass! Draft is done until I get back comments from first readers. I CAN WRITE SOMETHING ELSE NOW.
