Dear Yuletide Author!

Hi, Yuletide Author!

Thank you so much for writing me a fic! I love all of these fandoms, so whatever we're matched on, you know I'm thrilled! That said, if you want to branch out, both The Fox Woman and Strictly Ballroom are single-source canons - one book, one movie - and the creators of Freakangels post the entire thing free online.

I'm genuinely not fussy about whether you write gen, slash, femslash or het - I read and write all of them, and I don't ship anything in particular - but I really, really don't like character-bashing. If you want to split up a canon couple, go for it, but not by making one of them Evil McNastyface. I love adventure stories, character pieces, missing scenes, original characters in a canon world, unexpected friendships or alliances, creative views of magic and/or superpowers and everything from light and fluffy to darkly satirical. Child/adult sex, porn without plot (as opposed to porn WITH plot), BDSM, and eroticised rape or torture are all things I don't particularly enjoy.

Freakangels

I find it really fascinating that the Freakangels have specialised so much after settling in Whitechapel - Caz the engineer, Miki the doctor, Kait the detective, Karl the gardener - and I would love a story about any of them finding out what they do best and why they do it. I've chosen these four characters in my sign-up but a focus on any one of them would be great.

I wrote in this fandom last year, so now I'm requesting it! It's not the apocalyptic setting that I like so much as the epic rebuilding, and the way that the Freakangels explore (or refuse to explore) the very different applications of their powers and their skills. I've never been to London, so I'm not going to notice if you get locations a bit wrong - don't let the extreme detail of the art worry you. I like all of the characters except Liam, so appearances from other Freakangels are highly encouraged, where possible.

Kij Johnson - The Fox Woman

Shikujo was a particularly fascinating character to me, and while her story and the reasons behind her watchfulness were strongly implied, we didn't get to see how her encounter with the foxes had gone, nor why she appears to be so negative towards Kitsune's presence. I would love to know more about Shikujo's life - or what she was doing at any time in the book - and what she knows. I've focused on Shikujo in my request, but really, I would love to see more from any of the peripheral characters, or even the main characters when their world falls apart.

I nominated this fandom because the book is so perfectly claustrophobic, despite the multiple viewpoints, and I think a Yuletide fic would be like a breath of fresh air. Shikujo is the character who springs to mind as an alternate perspective - much of what we saw of her was her watching over her husband - but any of the peripheral characters, including the other foxes, would be fascinating. The aesthetics of Heian Period put such emphasis on the transitory that it seemed entirely appropriate that Kitsune and Yoshifuji's palace was not to be, but they weren't the only ones with goals and dreams.

Nana (manga)

While I love a lot of things about this comic, the thing I like most of all are the female friendships. While I would be totally happy with a story about any of the characters in the series - and gen, het, slash or femslash are very welcome - I would be especially thrilled by a story featuring the bonds between the female characters. (Note: I am up-to-date on the official English translations, but not on the Japanese versions.)

If you've read the Japanese originals, please don't spoil me! I know spoilers are a fluid concept in this fandom, due to the flash-forwards, but I don't yet know all of what is going on. I love both the sprawling ensemble and the tight-knit groups inside that (the two bands, the two Nanas, the romantic pairings, the fan club, the childhood friendships) and there's so many places to go with this fandom. At the moment in canon, Takumi and Hachi's relationship is pretty unpleasant and controlling, so I would prefer it if that wasn't made a wonderful romantic marriage in the narrative - though Hachi might well try to convince herself that it is! The same goes for the darker parts of Ren and Nana's relationship - if you're going to write about that, please don't sanitise or redeem it, if you're writing in the current time-period in canon.

Strictly Ballroom

For Scott and Fran, love is in the air. But what about brave Liz? Former Pan-Pacific Champion Tina Sparkle? Shirley Hastings and her smile? And of course, it took Fran a long time to overcome her fear and avoid that life half-lived. I would adore a story about absolutely any of these characters, at any time in their lives, from social dancing to the Pan-Pacifics. Femslash is encouraged, but anything fabulous would be loved.

I love this movie so much - it's everything good and bad about the urban parts of my country all rolled into a big sparkly ball. Best of all, it takes itself utterly seriously while simultaneously taking the piss, in a way that I can't even define. So, any genre from serious metafic to slapstick to romantic drama would fit with this movie, and any of these would be awesome. I've focused on the female characters because, while they were all fantastic - in both senses - they didn't quite get their place in the spotlight. They were busy doing everything Scott Hastings did, only backwards in high heels and spandex, with dazzling teeth and flashing spangles, and we didn't get to see what it all meant for them. Don't feel obliged to include all the nominated characters, either - any one of them would be a delight.
