ETA: The link was wrong before. I've fixed it, I hope.
I have a tremendous request for everyone who reads my journal. It's going to take me a bit to make my point, but please stick with me.
I am a lifelong couch potato. I would much rather read than go do something active. It's not that I don't enjoy outdoor activities once I actually do them, it's just that I find it hard to motivate myself to get up and move.
About three months ago, I got my lazy self up off the couch, and three days a week began dragging out of bed at 6:00 am to meet my friend to run. When we started, we would run for one minute, then walk for two; it was all we could do. Now, we generally go over two miles.
In December 2002, my dear friend Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer has become the second leading cause of death among women. Roughly 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Those odds mean that you know someone - wives, mothers, sisters and friends - who will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sharon kicked its ass like Xena takes out ten armed men simultaneously attacking her. I am lucky to be able to report that she is now a 1+ year survivor.
What does the one thing have to do with the other? It is in Sharon's honor that I am running my first 5K, the City of Hope Walk for Hope, on October 10, to raise money for breast cancer research. City of Hope is a preeminent center for breast cancer research. My goal is to raise at least $300.00 so more women can make like Xena.
