Inara is drunk.
At least, she thinks she must be to have lost this much of her control. When she rolls over at night, she hears Kaylee’s laughter in her sleep. At the sound, warmth steals through her and, half-awake, she smiles, inebriated with the possibilities. Only in the quiet of the early mornings, when the sound has faded and she has sobered, does Inara acknowledge that at some point the other woman started sharing her mind as well as her bed.
These days she looks for Kaylee when she returns from a client. It’s like she hasn’t truly come home until she sees her again.
It scares her. She scares her. Pretty little Kaylee, with her smile like sunshine.
Inara wonders when its warmth flared into this burn.
She is terrified of the burn.
