"We're not stopping, and that's all I'm sayin' about it. Now I can give you somewhat extra for your help in our last round of 'petty thieving' if you need it, but-"
"What I definitely do not need is your charity." Inara turned and stalked down the corridor, barely managing to reign in the impulse to smack the wall. Of all the hardheaded, kěwù de bàojūn…
Halfway across the catwalk a glimpse of a familiar, coveralled leg arrested her progress. Grabbing the railing, she peered down into the lower cargo bay. “Kaylee?”
“Yes?”
“What are you doing down there?”
“Listening.”
Inara started down the stairs. “To what?”
“Serenity.” Kaylee sat curled against cool, grey metal, the side of her face and the palm of one hand in firm contact with the wall.
Inara wondered if Kaylee might be the only person on the ship that possessed anything resembling communication skills. “What does she say?”
“Come listen.” Kaylee reached up and took Inara’s hand. She interlocked their fingers then slid both their hands onto the metallic surface. “Do you hear that?”
Inara didn’t know what she heard, only what she felt. Looking down at the tousled hair of the woman below her, she could feel more vibrations than could be attributed to the heartbeat of Serenity. She only started listening when, as if counterpoint to the steady thrum of the engines, her and Kaylee’s breathing picked up speed.
