When she enters Inara's quarters, Kaylee is slick with grease and other assorted engine fluids-in other words, she's covered in Serenity.
A usual state of being for her; normally she doesn't mind one bit. But today has been such a long day, and it's been such a long time since the shindig on Persephone. Since then she's hardly been planet-side, her only role on the crew being that of the faithful mechanic. Not that she's complaining, but she'd really like just one more chance to wear that fancy pink dress hanging on her wall.
She feels a reluctant smile light her face as she admits that the steel-grey interior of Serenity wears the garment well, perhaps even better than she herself did at the party.
Inara looks up just in time to catch Kaylee's smile. Smiling back, she puts down her washcloth and pulls up her gown to cover her chest.
"Hey, 'Nara, you just get back?" Kaylee asks.
"Yes." Inara's gaze takes in the other woman's disheveled appearance. "You seem to have had quite the day."
Kaylee's smile falters, not because the statement is a criticism, but rather because today it's an unpalatable truth.
"I've had a rough day myself." Inara deliberately picks up a small, turquoise-filled bottle off the shelf beside her. "So I'm going to paint my nails. Want to join me?"
Kaylee knows the suggestion is ridiculous. Why, the next time she works it'll come right off.
It's also the shiniest idea she's heard all day.
