So, it always rains when I move, but this is a tad worse
My dad said he would take Thursday off of work to help me move the furniture. Then he ended up having to work anyway, so we didn't leave until like 5:30pm. Before we could do that I had to take my cat to the vet so she could get her rabies and distemper booster shots so she could move into the apartment. And that was an adventure, to be sure. So anyway, we left at 5:30pm. Got all of the furniture packed in the trailer, tied the tarp down, packed up the car, and were off on our merry way. I was driving the car with the trailer and my dad was driving the car with the cat, following me. We got about 40 miles down the express way (bath, michigan), and we noticed that the tarp was coming un-done, so we got off at the nearest exit and pulled into the first parking lot. The tarp was comPLETEly shredded to bits. It was old, and it had just . . . started shredding. So we had no choice but to take it off and put it in the trunk of dad's car to throw away later. I suggested we tie down the furniture, but dad said it'd be fine because it hadn't been wiggling around.
It didn't look too much like it was going to rain, so we thought we might be okay, but what else could we do? We got on the expressway and kept going. Not 10 minutes later, we saw lightning. Through the cell phones, my dad and I communicated that we should stop under an overpass once it started to rain. We passed over a good one, and he said not to stop, because it wasn't raining yet. Well, before we could get to the next overpass, it started raining. Big drops, too. So we got there as fast as we could, and stopped. Unfortunately, the rain was coming down hard, and stuff was still getting wet. So we took out the shreds of tarp and tried to cover the mattresses. But we got completely drenched in a matter of seconds. The rain was going completely horizontally, and there wasn't much we could do but wait it out. Luckily in Michigan that doesn't take horribly long. While we were sitting there waiting, a cop pulled up behind my dad's car and put his lights on. We thought we were in trouble, and didn't even know why.
Turns out he was only checking to make sure that we were waiting out the rain. (Duh?!) So finally it's just sprinkling, and we were like-- the stuff is already all wet anyway, we might as well go. So we start driving again, and I just get up to 60 mph (I'd been going 65 before the rain) when i check the trailer just in time to see the mattresses FLY out of the trailer. My dad and I were on our cell phones, and we both went "oh SHOOT!" and hung up the phones. By the time I was able to pull over (it's harder with the trailer and wet roads) I was about 1/4 mile up the expressway from where the stuff was, and where my dad was, and I pulled over, put the hazards on, and had to run back down the expressway to help my dad get the two chairs and two mattresses off of the expressway and back up to the trailer. Of course, as I'm doing this it's raining lightly, the roads are wet, and semi-trucks are coming down the expressway at 70 mph and spraying water at me.
So we get the stuff loaded back up, and pull my dad's car forward, and tie it down this time. We got almost all of the way there, and it started to rain again, but there were no more overpasses to pull under, so we just kept going. Finally we got to the apartment complex and had to move everything up to the 3rd floor and turn on the air conditioning to dry things off. We had to lean the mattresses up against the wall so that they could dry out. I ended up sleeping on the floor that night. It was raining the whole time we were moving stuff, the floor got all slippery, and my dad didn't get to leave to go home until 11pm-- meaning he didn't get home until 1am.
I never want to move again. *Headdesk*
At least it's funny now.
P.S. I hate allergies
