The Real Ghostbusters complete series box set. This cartoon used to rule my life. The box is designed to look like the Ghostbusters' firehouse! The box is designed to look like the Ghostbusters' firehouse!

Five volumes with 5 discs each + hella extras for days and days + episode guide book the size of the bible. The box is beautifully designed, with lots of concept art splashes, new character illustrations of the Ghostbusters and Janine, and even a couple neat lenticulars of the Ghost logo and Slimer.
I'm watching volume 3, disc 3 now. I'm at the penultimate episodes of season 2 (of the syndicated episodes); what I consider the cartoon's Golden Age. Right before the bad editorial mandates came in to change
Janine's look and
Peter's voices. I guess Arsenio Hall would have been too famous to keep playing
Winston but then again, I have yet to re-see the episodes with Buster Jone's V/O talents.
I remember spending years locked in my room just drawing my own Ghostbusters comic adventures. In my artistic development years, those character designs are what I lived by. Then there were the desperate searches for the comic books at my local comic shop in Roger's Park. And then there were all my toys. I can't believe I'm even considering selling
these.... But still, even though I didn't agree with some of their changes, there were still some great moments on the new episodes that it wasn't enough to stop me from coming back for more and more and more.
It's cool watching these cartoons again. I get thrills from remembering the thrills I used to get every Saturday morning and after school just from watching the Ghostbusters. It's fun to experience the show as an adult because I'm enjoying this on a whole different level. The nostalgia levels are at maximum overdrive when I see bad guys like
Samhain,
Sandman, and
Baby Spookums. The ghosts range from silly to grotesque and mildly disturbing; and feasting my eyes on the animation- which for the most part, is amazing and at times downright stunning- again is a beautiful gift that I only have technology and marketing to thank. On top of all that, watching each disc's visual commentary episodes feeds delicious, juicy behind-the-scenes insight that satiates the rabid fanboy in me.
Watching a marathon of these cartoons makes me feel like I'm taking a long, hot. steamy, obsessive compulsive shower, and I'm not coming out until I've got prune hands.
Okay... on to the next episode...
