For those who don't get the day off, it's easy to forget what day this is. For those who do get the day off, it's perhaps even easier to forget, and to spend the day shopping or something after listening to the obligatory recitation of the "Dream" speech. You could make the case (but won't have to, 'cuz I'm about to) that "He understood the threats against him but refused to let them alter the way he lived." is really a way of saying "live free or die". While people usually think of that motto in individualistic terms (that is, "I'll live free or YOU will die"), this is more direct. I will live free from being a source of violence, or I will die.

And forgetting about interpretation for a moment, you may find this article interesting - it's about the "I Have A Dream" speech and how it changed from the first draft (which was written in part by the fellow who wrote the article).
