“Hyung, what are you doing?”
Donghae looked up to see Kyuhyun standing at his door, eyes looking quizzically at him. “Mmm.”
“Hyung, that didn’t answer my question.”
“Mmm.” Donghae turned back to the box he had held in his hand, noting that Kyuhyun had left without waiting for a proper answer. Not that Donghae felt he was able to give one either.
Donghae was confused. He felt that the box should hold more than just… well, that. He continued to stare inside the box where a teddy bear wearing a fish costume was nestled amongst tissue paper. He sighed but continued staring at the box, as if staring at it would resolve his dilemma.
“Kibum!!! What are you doing here? Don’t you have filming?”
“Yeah, I do. But I heard you guys were back so I thought I’d come for a quick visit.”
Donghae threw his arms around Kibum, hugging him tightly. Leaning his head on Kibum’s shoulder, he inhaled the scent that was purely Kibum. Sudden tears began to prick at the corners of his eyes, but he silently willed them away. He didn't want to spoil this moment. He wanted to savor it for the next few months that he wouldn’t’t be able to see Kibum.
“Donghae, I have something for you.”
Donghae quickly released his hold on Kibum and looked at him with his eager, puppy-like eyes.
Kibum laughed at him and took his time removing a white box from his bag.
Donghae tried to grab it out of Kibum’s hand but Kibum held him off. “Happy birthday, Donghae. It’s an early birthday present. But… don’t open it now. Open it when on your birthday. Please?”
Donghae looked at Kibum, a bit confused. He couldn’t help but nod seeing the look in Kibum’s eyes. He wondered if he looked like that when he tried to beg for something because it’s no wonder everyone let him have his way.
Suddenly he couldn't remember what he had been thinking about. For a few minutes all he saw was the radiant smile of Kibum’s that was bestowed upon him. He had the sudden impulse to jump Kibum right then and there. To kiss that smile. But instead, he just fixed that smile into his mind and stored it away in his heart. He didn’t want to destroy their friendship.
“Kibum!!! When did you get here?!”
Donghae was suddenly pushed out of the way in everyone’s attempt to try to give Kibum a hug and exclaim over his absence. He went to his room and added the present to his pile of clothing that was waiting for him to pack for China.
He quickly went out again, not willing to miss a single second of seeing Kibum. Even with 11 other members there, he just wanted to be able to see Kibum’s smile, hear Kibum’s laugh, feel Kibum’s presence.
“Hyung, please don’t tell me you’ve been staring at that box the entire time that I was out.”
Donghae looked up again to see Kyuhyun at his door once again. This time, however, a small frown was on his face.
Donghae shrugged and continued to stare at the box.
He felt his bed dip slightly. Kyuhyun slowly pried the box away from his hands. “Hyung, isn’t this the present that Kibum gave you when we were still in China.”
He nodded, eyes still locked at the box.
Kyuhyun sighed before handing the box back to Donghae. “Hyung, why don’t you just confess to him already?”
Donghae’s eyes snapped to Kyuhyun, shock written all over his face. His mind and heart seemed to have stopped. If Kyuhyun knew… that means the other members might have noticed! He began to panic.
Kyuhyun laid a hand on Donghae’s after noticing that he was beginning to panic. “No, hyung, no one but Zhou Mi and I have noticed.”
Donghae cocked his head to the side, staring at Kyuhyun, still not trusting his voice to speak. Kyuhyun sighed again. “Well, we kind of noticed you wouldn't stop looking at Kibum’s present and how you jumped each time the phone rang. And when you realized it was one of the other members, you looked a bit down. Hyung, you should just confess to him already.”
Donghae shook his head. Tears began coursing down his cheeks.
Kyuhyun took one look at Donghae and just hugged him. This is going to take a while, he thought to himself, mentally noting that he was going to have to enlist Zhou Mi’s help.
Meanwhile back in Korea, Kibum had decided to go visit the remainder of his hyungs that were still there.
He was about to knock on the door when it suddenly opened. “Kibum!”
“Hey, Sungmin hyung.”
“Aren’t you going to come in?”
“Huh? Aren’t you on your way out?”
“Well, I was… but I think I’ll stay now.”
Kibum stepped inside and took off his shoes before being dragged by Sungmin over to the couch.
The other members all saw that Kibum had come to visit and were about to go and envelope him in hugs. That was before they noticed the look that Sungmin shot at them. Each of them quickly mumbled a hello and slipped out of the dorm, claiming they all had schedules or other things to do.
Kibum looked at them all quizzically then turned to Sungmin who had finally seated him onto the couch. “Errr… is everyone always this busy? I… kind of missed everyone.”
“Ah, they’ll be back soon. So… so… how are you?”
“Um, I’m fine. Filming’s just been a bit tiring but it’s that big really. I mean, after all, it’s my dream to be an actor.”
“Have you called Donghae at all?”
Kibum almost jumped at the sudden question. “Hyung, what are you asking that for?”
He tried to will his heart to beat a bit slower. He also tried to turn away, to hide the sudden blush creeping onto his cheeks, but something about Sungmin’s eyes refused to let him do so.
“Oh, please. You seriously think that all of us are like Kangin hyung? Some of us have noticed, you know. Especially when you gave that present to Donghae before he left for China. How come the rest of us don’t get presents, eh?”
Kibum really did blush this time. He opened his mouth to deny it but decided to quickly shut up, seeing that slightly pitying look in Sungmin’s eyes. He only just sighed.
“You should confess seriously.”
“But I did.”
“Huh?”
“That box… I wrote a letter and put it with the teddy bear. But Donghae hasn’t called me, so I’m guessing he doesn't like me that way.”
Sungmin’s thoughts were trying to quickly piece together the puzzle that was supposedly KiHae, as he affectionately put it. From his phone calls with Kyuhyun, that wouldn’t be the case as Donghae seemed to pining away for Kibum. As if he finally found the missing piece of the puzzle, he slapped a hand to his forehead. “Ouch!”
Kibum looked up at his hyung, a bit startled.
Sungmin noticed Kibum staring at him and just waved it off. “I’m fine. Look, I think we should head up to my dorm. I think some of the others might be there.”
He was also eager to get there and hand Kibum over to someone before making a call to Kyuhyun. It seemed like this was up to the two of them, seeing as how a clueless fish and a quiet one weren’t going to solve it themselves.
He chuckled to himself, enjoying this. He was excited to get the plan formulating in his mind into action. Operation KiHae officially begins.
“Donghae, are you sure you want to carry that box with you on the plane. Why don't you store it away into your bags?”
Donghae only looked up at Hankyung, as if to ask his hyung if he was crazy suggesting something like that.
Kyuhyun laid a hand on Donghae’s arm. “Hyung, just let Donghae hyung carry it with him on the plane, or else he won’t be able to sleep properly. It’s not like he’s making any of us carry it, right?”
Hankyung only nodded, noting down the situation, reminding himself to ask Heechul if there was something going on with Donghae.
They finally boarded the plane. Donghae was happy to be heading back to Korea, but he was afraid. Jungsu hyung had called a few days ago and told them all that he was arranging dinner at the dorms when Super Junior M returned to Korea. Dinner with everyone. Meaning Kibum would be there.
Kyuhyun had talked to Donghae a few more times, trying to reason with him that he should just confess to Kibum. He had nothing to lose. Kibum wasn’t the type to be repulsed or angry or anything. In fact, Kibum would only politely decline if he wasn’t interested. Not to mention, they were in China so much, he wouldn’t have to face Kibum if that did happen. Donghae wasn’t even sure that was a good thing. A small knot began to build upon his heart, constricting it slightly. He was nervous, he admits.
Kyuhyun noticed the thoughtful look on Donghae’s face. He was tempted right then to blurt out what Sungmin had told him over the phone.
Lucky for him, he was sitting in between Donghae and Zhou Mi. Zhou Mi had saw that look in Kyuhyun’s face and quickly tugged at his arm.
Kyuhyun looked at Zhou Mi and before he knew it, a small kiss was placed on his lips and then disappearing again as if it hadn’t happened. Kyuhyun turned and glared at Zhou Mi who only smiled at him.
Zhou Mi raised his eyebrow at Kyuhyun, then nodded in Donghae’s direction. Kyuhyun quickly understood and sighed. This was going to be a long plane trip.
Zhou Mi only just grabbed onto Kyuhyun’s hand, idly tracing patterns on his palm, as if to distract him.
Kyuhyun was right. The plane ride seemed much longer than usual. Perhaps because he was so excited and nervous at the same time. He wanted things to go well for Donghae hyung. He didn’t want to see an unhappy Donghae.
“Almost there, Kyu.”
Kyuhyun turned to smile at Zhou Mi, and squeezed the older man’s hand in response. Almost there, indeed.
They proceeded to get all their luggage and trooped to the van. Kyuhyun had quickly claimed sitting with Donghae at the very back to the van, much to everyone’s surprise. They would have thought he would have dragged Zhou Mi there instead to get some time together. They all looked at Zhou Mi who just smiled and winked at them, making them even more confused.
“Hyung, can I see that box for just a second?”
Donghae just handed the box to Kyuhyun, his eyes not leaving it for even just one second. Kyuhyun took the teddy bear out of the box with such a fuss, moving the tissue paper around so much. He just flashed a smile at Donghae after locating the presence of the elusive letter and trying to move it subtly into a position that would ensure Donghae saw. He put the teddy bear back into the box and handed it back to Donghae, who was now beyond confused but decided he didn’t really want to know and continued to gaze forlornly at the teddy bear. He sighed and began to arrange the teddy bear back into its rightful position. It was at that moment that he felt something that wasn't the teddy bear or the tissue paper brush across his hand. His eyes snapped to the piece of white paper poking slightly out from the side of the box.
He turned to look at Kyuhyun, who had decided at that time to lean his chin on the seat in front of him, which had Zhou Mi conveniently seated in it.
Donghae quickly yanked the envelope out, dimly noting that written on it, in Kibum’s handwriting, was his name. He all but tore the envelope and spent the remainder of the car ride reading and re-reading the letter, tears silently coursing down his cheeks. The other members looked at Kyuhyun in surprise, wanting to demand what was going on. Kyuhyun just shook his head and put his finger to his lips. The other members, except Zhou Mi, could only guess what was happening.
Kyuhyun rested his chin back on Zhou Mi’s seat, just noting that Zhou Mi had pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
The car ride seemed to have slowed down each minute to Donghae. He wanted to go back to the dorm right then and throw his arms around Kibum. He was such an idiot. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed. He tried once again to get Kyuhyun’s attention, but the younger man seemed just as preoccupied as before with Zhou Mi so he decided to re-read the letter again. Although by now, he had just about memorised the entire thing.
Eventually the car came to a stop. He all but tore his seatbelt off in an attempt to get out of the van as quick as possible. He barely noticed that the other members were asking him what he was in such a rush for, but he chose to ignore them. His mind was only fixated on one thing: Kim Kibum.
He frantically pressed the up button for the elevator. He didn't even bother waiting for the other members, quickly getting on and pressing the button to get him to the floor of his dorm. He practically danced on the floor of the elevator in impatience.
No sooner had he arrived on the 11th floor and tore out of the elevator. He quickly pressed the code to get into the door and tore inside, searching for one particular face.
He was sure the other members were shouting at him, welcoming him back but he only really noticed one thing. Or rather one person.
He was standing there at the back, a small, unsure smile on his lips. Donghae raced into the dorm and threw his arms around Kibum’s neck and kissed him.
Kibum wasn't too sure what had just happened. One minute he was standing there waiting for the Super Junior M members to return, unsure of what to do when Donghae arrived. The next minute, said boy was at him, kissing him. Kissing him. That’s all that preoccupied his mind now. Donghae’s lips on his. After his initial shock, he began to kiss Donghae back, throwing in as much as Donghae was. He noted that the other members had arrived but that didn’t let him release his hold on Donghae, nor did Donghae release his hold.
After what seemed like ages, they finally let each other go in order to breath. They continued to gaze at one another, love written in both their eyes, without taking their arms off each other.
Donghae smiled a bit sheepishly at Kibum and held up the letter still clutched in his hand, mouthing sorry before he returned that arm to around Kibum’s neck, kissing him again.
The other members were, needless to say, a bit confused and shocked. They all had their suspicions about Donghae and Kibum but as neither of them had showed anything more than brotherly love, they had thought it was nothing more than that. Well, all the other members but the three standing at the back, engaged in their own little reunion.
“Hyung, we actually did.”
“I know, Kyuhyun. I can’t believe it. I’m so happy for them.”
Zhou Mi pouted at the other two. “But I didn’t get a chance to play!”
The pink-loving boy and the snarky magnae only laughed at him and pulled him into a tighter hug. They all sighed with happiness as they looked over at the KiHae couple, still in their own world.
