My Country Tis of Thieves....

Thinking back to the 2000/2004 elections, I wonder about what would have happened if we had elected Kerry or the other Democrate running during 2000. The events that have happened over the past six years would still have taken place. But I wonder about what would have been handled differently ( Read more... )

Most of the big stuff would be the same (9/11, Afganistan War, etc). But it's pretty certain that if Gore were elected, we'd not be in Iraq. So there's one big difference. Saddam would be in power, but there would be a lot more people alive. (Good or bad, that's up to you to decide)

We'd also see shifts in some domestic policy, esp on the tax/environmentalist ends. Though the biggest differences we'd see are the ones about to come up: Bush gets to appoint two lifetime supreme court justices, something that's going to have effects for the next 20-30 years. If nothing else, the people chosen for this court will be the ones who get to decide issues about whether Andy can get married or not.

So yeah... people may disagree on the issues, and sure, most politicans aren't that good. But there are actual policy differences between people you can vote on. Given that they deal with issues of life and death, our (rather shitty) choices matter.

To quote a recent episode of South Park: "I've learned that sometimes you have to choose between a Turdburger and a Stupid Douche."

You say it is "pretty certain" that we wouldn't be in Iraq had Gore been elected. How can you be so sure? Just because a politician says *now* that they wouldn't have done that, doesn't mean anything. There is still the chance that we would be overseas - just because the leadership of this country seems to have a superiority complex.

And let's say Kerry was elected. We would probably still be in Iraq right now, with the people saying, well if we had elected Bush again, we wouldn't be there anymore.

But as the saying goes, Hindsight is always 20/20 and even with what we have seen so far on the Republican side of leadership, the people will still vote a Republican into office for the next election.
