Dad seemed happy with Diane the rare times I saw him at home, since he spent most of it in the office. But when he was around her it was as if no one else existed, which hurt, because I remember when he used to look at Mom that way.
I suppose Diane was counting on Dad to be out of the house when she consumated her flirtation with Pablo, our young neighbor.
What she wasn't counting on was Dad catching her in the act. He was crushed and furious and reacting acoordingly...
Diane reacted by blaming Dad, saying that since he barely spent time in the house, she was seduced by someone who actually paid attention. After kicking Pablo out, Dad and Diane fought for hours and she stormed off.
That's when I ventured into their bedroom to find Dad crying and he told me what happened as I tried to console him.
But when I tried to mention how she treated me or that perhaps he should leave her, he closed off completely.
Hours later Diana came back and Dad actually apologized to her.
They made up.
But by that time, I was busy with concerns of my own...
None of us were prepared for what happened next...
