Brawley Player Injured at Football Practice Dies
SAN DIEGO - Brian Thomas, a Brawley Union High School student injured
Wednesday during a football practice, died at 12:10 this morning, officials with the
University of California San Diego Medical Center said. Thomas, a 17-year-old senior, had
been on life support at the medical center since Wednesday, when he suffered a spine
injury during a varsity scrimmage. A family spokesman, the Rev. Joe Conner of New
Bethel Baptist Church in Brawley, said Thomas was pronounced brain dead at 3 p.m.
Sunday, and on Monday the family made the decision to take him off life support.
