This week went to hell, so far as meal planning went. I can try blaming this on my son visiting, but it's just as much about the other factors that are inhibiting our cooking: this heat wave, and our sudden biking passion. We're living on restaurant food this week and next, until we can recover our momentum.
Saturday: Homemade pizzas with the CCC crowd, in a pleasant departure from what is becoming a weary routine of Teapot every week. Everyone brought toppings and enjoyed the experiment. Next week there's to be no regular gathering, due to my son's visit. It's bad enough he's got me for a mother without subjecting him to even moderate hedonism. Maybe when he's older. Like 30.
Sunday: Herb roasted chicken, potatoes, fennel (it was wonderful,
bruiseblue!), turnips, carrots, and garlic
Monday: Out at La Cazuela, the sit-down Mexican place in downtown Northampton we've been meaning to try. Usually we go to the counter-service place, La Veracruzana. Having had both now, I think the food's better at La Veracruzana.
Tuesday: Szechuan tofu, yellow squash and carrots sauteed with butter, and brown rice
Wednesday: Since my son's flight came in late Wednesday night (scheduled time: 9:59 PM. actual time: 11:05 PM. Grrr.) we ate out in the area where we work. Went out to Max's Tavern, the "place to be seen" if you're from the town where I work, and so therefore a great place for me and Kevin to jointly knock over my glass of cabernet, me to finally dump it onto the cuff of my white dress shirt, and for me to then jump up and yell "Fuck!" really loud like the cultured dipshit I am. After I got cleaned up and rolled up the sleeves so I could forget about the indelible stains, I was able to enjoy myself (much to Kevin's relief, if not to the rest of the crowd there hoping to be seen.)
The
menu was, for once around here, surprising, although they're sort of overpriced. The price of eating within sight of the famous Basketball Hall of Fame basketball beacon, I suppose. We ate outside, and would you believe my boss and her husband walked in while we were there? We all greeted one another and they must have chosen to eat inside. They sent us out two glasses of wine, though. So nice! We sent them back a dessert: I wanted to send them one of the peach upside down cakes (made with fresh peaches) with gelato and fresh raspberries, because we enjoyed ours so much, but they chose chocolate cake instead. I have to remember to thank my boss when I see her.
Thursday: Delivery from Teapot.
Friday: Out to Fitzwilly's, the Americana place downtown. I felt really weird being out to dinner with my little family there: externally, there's the gay couple with the not-quite adolescent boy. Internally, I felt like "Mom" (as my son still calls me) with "Dad" and "Kid." The more wine I drank the worse that got, until I had to read the restroom door sign several times before going inside.
Saturday: This morning we had pancakes, and the kid had frozen waffles, which, along with broccoli, lettuce, deli turkey and swiss cheese, are his staple foods. We're going out to the movies and shopping now, and will eat out I know not where.
