The cold of his water bit through his skin as his body sank like a stone, feeling the current swirl above his head as he did. He kept his eyes closed at first, wanting to wait until he felt his feet hit the ground ( Read more... )

Ryan was lying on her stomach flipping through channels when the phone rang. She stretched, snagging it with just the tips of her fingers then rolling it into her hand as she brought it to her ear.

"Yello,"she answered lazily, pausing her channel flipping.

"You need to get out of there now," he said, not even bothering with the preamble. If they knew where he was doing business, it wouldn't be all that hard for them to find her, and he wanted Ryan getting out in one piece. His voice was all soldier -- or at least more soldier than it had been in a while, and while on some levels that was a bit scary, it needed to be done.

"One of my clients sold me out to some government boys with guns -- I lost them, but they could be heading to you next."

Ryan was on her feet as soon as the words were out of his mouth. She started throwing things in a bag and shoving her feet into a pair of shoes.

"Where are you? I'll pick you up."

"I think I'm in Hoboken?" he said with a frown as he glanced around, looking for a city sign. "I went for a swim in the Hudson and wound up on the Jersey side, but if that's not the case -- I'll make my way to Hoboken. Take my bike -- keys should be on the dresser."

He paused for a minute before glancing down at himself. "And can you grab me some clothes?"

"Already on it," she told him as she slipped the duffel bag over her shoulder and snagged the keys off the dresser. "Give me a landmark to meet you at. Or I can drive down the Jersey side Hudson 'til I see you."

Mickey glanced around for a moment, letting his eyes scan the skyline for a moment before he spotted a giant neon colored sign on one of the buildings.

"Z100," he sighed. "It's a radio station -- giant neon sign on the front. I'll be somewhere in the vicinity."

"I'm leaving now. Watch your ass, Mouse Boy. I like having you around," Ryan said. She hung up the phone and took the stairs down to the lobby. She got the bike herself, stowed the duffel bag and started the bike.

She drove too fast, catching sight of the Z100 sign then heading toward it and the river. She caught sight of a half naked, soaked Mickey walking and pulled up next to him, cutting the engine.

"Not that I'm opposed to you half naked but you look cold," she said as she got the duffel bag out and grabbed a tee shirt from it and a pair of jeans for him.

"Very cold, thank you," he sighed as he pulled the t-shirt over his head, and then started to slip into the jeans. "Apparently this isn't the time of year for swimming in the Hudson."

Most people would probably tell him that it was never a good time of year to go swimming in the Hudson. But thanks to the Manticore immunization package, most of their reasons he wasn't really all that worried about.

"How was the drive?"

"Oh you know. Relaxing and peaceful," Ryan volleyed back with a smirk. She took Mickey's leather jacket out of the back of the motorcycle and held it out to him.

"No one followed me. I did a little bit of doubling back to make certain."

Boots and socks came next. She sat them on the ground next to him and put the kickstand on the bike down, swinging off to stand with one hip cocked out, watching him dress.

"So what happened?"

"Honestly? No fucking clue," he said with a shrug as he dropped down on the grass to pull on his shoes and socks. "One minute we were getting down to business, the next thing I know, men with guns are breaking down the door, and I'm launching myself over the balcony into water without getting myself shot first."

Once the shoes were in place, he stood up and pulled on the jacket, huddling into the warmth. "Really not an experience I'd like to be repeating. The only reason I can come up with, is that she must have some idea what transgenics are, seen the barcode and put two and two together."

Ryan sighed and slipped her arms around him, inside his jacket and pulling him against her. He was cold, she was warm and besides, they could both use the hugs.

"You've got to be more careful," she warned him quietly. "Who am I going to irritate if Manticore gets a hold of you again?"

He slid his arms around her shoulders with a sigh, before speaking again. "I know, I know. I'm just used to people thinking it's a really strange tattoo choice. I'll pick up some foundation at the next drug store."

"I can cover it up for you," Ryan told him, resting her head against his shoulder. She pressed a kiss to his shoulder over his jacket. "Come on. Let's get out of here and find some place safe."

"Sounds good to me," he nodded, before letting her pull away and headed back in the direction of his bike. "You want to drive, or should I?"

"You can, unless you're not feeling up to it," Ryan said, taking a step backward. She slid her hands into the back pockets of her jeans and looked up at him.

"No, I'm good," he said with a nod before starting to straddle the bike. "I could use some time clearing my head."
