There were advantages to being the pilot. Being able to sit and watch the world go by out of the cargo bay was one of them. Mal, Zoe and Jayne were off on some deal, Simon and River were... somewhere, and Kaylee had gone to visit a friend of hers on this rock. It wasn't a great planet, their jobs had become harder and harder to get, having to hide from the Alliance to protect Simon and River.
He smiled to himself as he leaned back in his chair, enjoying the sun, watching the men approach Serenity. Something about them didn't sit right, and he sat more upright, hoping Simon and River were nowhere in sight. "Howdy, folks," he said as they walked right up to the ship.
"You the pilot of this boat?" The taller of the three men asked.
"That I am. Serenity," Wash said, standing, and moving behind his chair.
"Good. Just what I wanted to hear. You're coming with us." The two smaller men - both still taller than Wash moved, and grabbed hold of his arms.
"No, you don't want to do that," Wash said, panicking. He was alone here, and no Zoe close by. They weren't due back for at least an hour.
"Tough. We need a pilot. And you're it."
