It had taken a few weeks for the nightmares to fade for Wash, but they did, bringing life back to normal for the couple as they carried on, carving out a path for themselves.
"We get a new job?" Kaylee asked Mal as he came into the galley. They'd been stuck on Persephone for a day or two while Mal worked a new contact that Badger had given them.
"We do indeed." Mal looked smug as he pulled out a chair, looking at his crew. "And it'll please Inara. It's a moon called Siren, orbiting Bernadette. Core planet, core moon. She'll be able to get decent work for a while." Wash's head had come up sharply, staring at Mal. "You know it, Wash?"
"Siren? Uh... yeah. I know it," he said, drawing in a sharp breath. "Bernadette's used as a settler staging post. What we got there?"
"We're to take a new crop they want to test on Siren, do a drop off there."
"Siren's polluted to hell," Wash said, frowning slightly. "Ain't much'll grow there."
"That's what they're hoping. We go, spend some time there while Inara does what she has to. Questions?"
"Core moon, does that mean we get to go out, have an explore?" Kaylee asked, smiling with excitement.
"Probably. Inara'll want a few days there, for sure, and it's a good payin' job."
While the others left, chatting about what they were going to be able to do so close to the core, Wash sat at the table, staring into space.
