Once upon a time there an enchanted prince who lived in an underground cave. With him lived a healer, a sorceress, a wise woman, several trolls and a small dragon. With him also lived a knight, who loved the prince very much but also kept a secret from him. The secret was that he had hidden a monster in the cave, for he thought the monster was a damsel in distress under a spell and he feared the prince would kill the monster.
The knight brought a wizard to heal the damsel, but the damsel, instead of being turned back into a girl, transformed completely into a monster and killed the wizard. She threatened to do the same to everyone who lived in the cave. She even tried to kill the knight, but the prince woke him up with a kiss. The sorceress, the wise woman and the healer had to destroy the monster, and the knight's grief was very great.
For many weeks the knight lived as though he were lost in a dark wood. The world was so dark and cold and strange that the knight feared he might be dead. He thought an angel might heal him, but the angel could not. He thought a scholar might heal him, but the scholar could not. He thought a demon might heal him, but the demon could not. He thought a mage might heal him, but even the mage could not.
Finally, the knight went to the prince and said, "I must beg a favor. You are my only hope."
"I'll grant you any wish you request," said the prince, "but you must promise me something in return."
"Anything," said the knight, "if you'll bring the light back to my eyes. It's so dark I can hardly see. It's so cold I feel I might be dead."
So the prince kissed him, and overhead the stars came back, and the sun shone in the day and moon at night, and the knight felt alive again.
He said to the prince, "You have restored me to life. What is it that you want me to promise in return?"
"My magic," said the prince, "needs to be fed to stay strong. I need you to share your light with me, and I vow I will always give it back to you tenfold."
So the knight swore he would always share his light with the prince, and the prince swore he would share his light with the knight, and they lived happily--and brightly--ever after.
