OOM: Ianto and John in Cardiff

Aug 31, 2008 13:34

If anyone notices that one man went through the door into the coffee shop and two come out a moment later, they say nothing about it.

Ianto will check the CCTV later, anyway. Just to be sure.

"Tailor first?" he says to Constantine. He's still holding his hand.

John looks around and grins. "So, tell me where we are. Are we far from your flat or where you work?" He follows Ianto's lead as they walk. "And what year is this again?"

"It's 2006," Ianto says, "and we are in Cardiff, wales. This is one of the better coffee shops in town." He points to the sign. "It's about ten minutes' walk from my flat, about fifteen from work. I pass it every day."

As they pass a news agent, John ducks inside and buys sixty Silk Cut. He looks at the date on the front page of the newspaper, and then buys two lottery tickets. When he comes back outside, he lights a smoke and gives the tickets to Ianto with a grin. "There you go, bright eyes. These'll do us for a few days. Where's this tailor of yours?"

Ianto raises an eyebrow at him but still smiles as he tucks the tickets away in his suit coat. "This way. You don't need to pay the way, though."

John shrugs and smirks. "It's only a couple hundred. Seems a shame not to take advantage of the old cliche."

As they go further up the road he says, "Nice little town. And it's not raining. I thought it rains here all the time."

"Give it a few minutes. It will.

"It's changed a lot since I was a kid. A lot of expansion and gentrification." He adds, as if the thought has just struck him, "It's like a haunted house, you know? Renovations are supposed to stir up ghosts--maybe all the new buildings did something to the Rift."

"You get many ghosts here?" John asks, as casually as if he were inquiring about tourists. Ghosts are something John and Ianto have in common. "I wouldn't mind taking a look at this Rift of yours... but I know it wouldn't be a good idea."

He's smiling at the thought, though.

"We tend to use ghosts as a catchall phrase. A ghost can be a memory or an actual time-slip, usually from the past. They're quite probably dead, but if they actually haunt a place in the usual sense?" He shrugs. "I have no idea."

He waves a hand towards the bay, which they can smell in this part of town if not see. "The Rift starts out there. No idea where it ends, what it looks like, how big it is . . ."

John stands smoking and looking in the direction Ianto points. "A fault line in space and time. That's brilliant!" He turns to Ianto and smiles. "Best get me to your tailor before I'm tempted to start sniffing."

"Plenty of time for sniffing later," Ianto says good-naturedly and steers John in the direction of his tailor.

There's an arcade of shops not far away: a records shop and womens' clothing and a sushi restaurant, and the understated shopfront of a tailor. Ianto pushes the door open.

John points at the sushi restaurant. "Oi! You weren't lying, you lot do eat sushi!" He pecks Ianto on the mouth. "You'll be telling me you have indoor plumbing next."

He stubs out his cigarette on the doorstep of the tailor shop and follows him inside.

"It's good for a growing boy," Ianto says with a smirk, and the smile becomes much less suggestive when the tailor joins them.

"This is my friend that I told you about. Mr. Constantine."

John gives the tailor an amiable nod. "All right, squire?"

Mun has never actually been to a tailor and so is going to handwave a bit.

A measuring tape is brought out as well as fabric samples, which Ianto studies with a discerning eye.

John stands for measuring with a minimum of impatience, but rejects any fabric that isn't blue, grey or charcoal.

After the order is made, they're told to come back the next day, and they leave.

[ooc: Works for me!]

"Not too painful, eh?" Ianto says, beaming as they walk up the arcade.
