Sadder days, unwelcome in the sand dunes. My new sisters bicker while I swim, until I am exhausted, in the draining sea. There are dead jellyfish on the beach, we adopt a careful way of walking and, hours later, trek back across the golf course to the car.

My mother wraps me in a towel, gives me warm, flat pineapple juice from a can when I come out of the sea. Father with his thin moustache, I cut him open with a glare as those giant seagulls come down and hang in the air.

My mother's watery eyes, Tess holding her laughter in in the snow. Our house, so full of ornaments and unwelcome men who are suddenly invited in from the cold. Watching TV and getting desperate.
