Now Some Character Info...
Character Name: Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau
Race: Human

JJ was raised in a middle class family, not nearly wealthy enough to own an angel or even know anyone who did. When she was a child she never really thought about them, though in a vague way she knew that they existed, the same way that she knew farms existed to grow food and power plants produced electricity. She was much more concerned with school, her friends, soccer games and following her big sister around. She worshiped her sister Alice, and wanted more then anything to be like her.

One afternoon when JJ was eleven her sister came into her bedroom. Alice took off her favorite necklace and hung it around her little sister's neck, telling her that 'no matter what happened' she loved JJ. Confused but overwhelmed and pleased by the gift and special attention JJ didn't ask too many questions, simply hugging her sister and thanking her. It was the last time they were together. That night Alice snuck out of the house. Unbeknownst to anyone in the family the teenage girl was involved in an underground organization to free Angels. Their goal that night was to stop a pit fight, and by the time dawn broke Alice and two others were dead. Their deaths were made to look like suicides but JJ never believed that.

For the next six years JJ spent all of her energy doing two things; studying and playing soccer. The first got her out of high school a year early, the second got her a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. More determination got her transferred to Georgetown two years later. For all her focus on getting an education she didn't actually know what she wanted to do, just that it had to be something that would make Alice proud. One night during her senior year she went to a book reading and everything changed. The author was David Rossi, the subject was profiling, and the result was an application to the FBI academy one week after graduating college.

JJ is the liaison for the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit, FBI) She's the one that stands between her team and the media, the one who interacts most with the local police agencies and the families of victims. It's also her job to go through all of the case requests they receive and chose which to present to the team. She's not a profiler, but according to Arron Hotchner, team leader, she could be if she wanted to; all it would take was a few classes. That's not what she wants. "I admire what you guys do, but I like my role. I like being the person the family can turn to. Being the voice of the poor, the over-worked homicide detective can call when he runs out of leads."

Working for the FBI has given JJ the purpose she sought from the day of Alice's funeral. It's her way of continuing her sister's fight, stopping the bad guys not matter if the crime involves angels or not. She's a capable agent, but it's her skills with people that are her strength. It's a weakness as well; having been in the shoes of the victim's family she can't close herself off from their pain. Cases involving young women, especially, affect JJ. No matter how it hurts, though, she won't stop.
